Ive finally decided on the digital camera I want to invest in but shopping round online the cheapest I can find is through eBAY. Check out the sticky that gives advise on camera buying. Several of the eBayers are listed and will come highly recommended from the people here, myself included...

Haven't heard of Global Phoenix Direct, but i did get my dSLR through eBay. No problems. Look for reputable sellers - check out their feedback scores, and also important is to read the recent feedback comments - i hadn't done this on a smaller item that i purchased and found that there had been warning signs in the recent feedback comments which weren't indicative in the overall feedback score. If i had of read the comments i wouldn't have purchased from the particular supplier and saved myself a good deal of grief. Having said that, i have bought cameras, memory cards, lens, and other items from various stores around the world on eBay and with no great difficulty. Seek international warranty with all goods and be mindful that you may have to pay duty, vat and admin expenses on an imported item (see other discussion over the past number of days). Generally it shouldn't be a problem though. Good luck with it.

i kinda felt the same way as the OP about buying on line and from ebay especially when it came to something as expensive-ish as a DSLR & i suppose i still feel the same way about electronics. but serious do as AnCatDubh said and check out the feedback scores and the sticky. It put my mind at ease, and i bought my 40d from ebay

For what it's worth, what they said - found a vendor with a high customer-happy % and it was delivered from Hong Kong in 3 days, at a saving of ~15% when compared to the high-street in Dublin.

    :)

for what it is worth I was in East Midlands airport recently on way to Jersey and there was a Dixon Tax Free Shop where I was able to buy camera free of UK VAT (and with a note saying that I had complied with all my EU VAT liabilities). So if you get a cheap flight it might be worth considering. And if you call them in advance they can have what you want in the shop for you

    What shop? What camera?....

For anything serious, 600E up, buy local. If it goes bad (unlikely) bring it back.

For happy snappy 300E and less. save a fortune, buy online...

7dayshop.com ain't bad, for bigger buys look at conns.ie, for deal of the decade watch adverts.ie ...
