I have the "My book" here now. The FW connection on my computer is a small one but the FW cable with the my book is very big.

Do I need to get another cable? I hope it is 800Mbps or else it really defeats the purpose?

It's a brand new Dell D830 latitude by the way.

There's 2 different connectors for Firewire 400. 4 pin and 6 pin (6-pin has power).

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FireWire.

Firewire 800 has a 9 pin connector which looks very different to the two 400 types.

Seems 1394c will use RJ45 connector, cool. Expect that to take a few years to get to market. Will USB3 also use RJ45? Wouldn't it be such a nice world to only have 1 cable to do so much.

Well then it does not matter because USB2 is faster than firewire 400.

I wonder would it be worth getting some sort of adapter for the extra speed.

eh... where did you pull that myth from. USB2 is NOT faster than Firewire400

    I thought USB2 was 480Mbps and Firewire 400 - 400Mbps.

USB 2 hasn't got a constant bit rate I believe.

Firewire is much better... And FW800 is just lovely.

If there was some sort of 800 adapter what could I connect it to on the back on my machine? Network port perhaps?

Very few computers come with FW800 slots as standard.

You could get one of these if your laptop has a PC Card Slot
