    Howdy,

Does anyone know whats the chances of a fresher getting a job working in the Pav or do they just take on non-students? And as a matter of interest, are there many freshers planning on working this year or just concentrating on the auwl books?

I'm going to try and get a band together and do a few gigs. If you can call that a job then yeah!:D

It won't just be the books though. I'm hoping to get involved with the publications, the hist, the phil (although the magazine we got today makes them all seem like a bunch of airheads and it makes them seem happy about being airheads) and about a dozen other societies. Woohoo. College.

Yeah you probably won't get a job in the pav.

I worked as a fresher, had to cut it out for 2nd year though in Science. A good option is to email sujobs@tcd.ie with the title and message "subscribe".

I did know people who worked at the Pav, but if you have a measure of bar experience, few pub managers would turn you away. I'd have thought that the Pav would be less fun to work in than somewhere bigger, busier, and with more prospect of tips :)

Might look for a job, not in the Pav though. Bar work = not fun.

I'm not gonna go looking for jobs until I've settled in properly- got my timetable, decided what societies and stuff I'm gonna be doing, etc. I just think it's too hard otherwise- I did try a bit over the summer, but it's so awkward telling prospective employers that you're not sure yet when you'll be available for work, and that all you know is that you'll have approximately x amount of hours in college per week!! I saw something in one of the leaflets that came this week about applying to the students' union for jobs- I think they run a newsagent and other stuff like that?
I'm gonna give piano-teaching a go myself- that way I can organise it around my timetable.

I thought the same myself, but I noticed that it all got very serious on the pages where they discussed the debates and the speakers they have coming in. I think all the other stuff is just to get your attention and make you want to join! Though I have to admit, the constant references to ''refreshments'' got a bit annoying after a while...there's lots of drink, we get it.

I don't think it was meant to be taken too seriously ;)

Yes, the Phil and Hist are full of juveniles who like to pretend that they are on the verge of a stint in rehab. If you're really interested in the serious side of it then take part in the fresher's debates. You don't have to get caught up in their jaded social scene to be part of the society. Also, when joining any society, remember that it is a sum of all the members. It's your society just as much as anyone elses. Be an individual.

Yup, two shops on campus. One by the Hamilton, one in House 6. If you're looking for a job ask in House 6.

Thats actually a very insightful description of them.

And X society is full of Y type of people, and Z society are totally up themselves. There's plenty of awful, awful people in both the Phil and the Hist (trust me, I have to bloody work with them), but the vast majority of people in both are absolutely nothing like the stereotypes. Though I do agree with you that it's better to be an individual than to try and adapt yourself to any society's image of what you should be - it's only college after all.

I'd go so far as to say there's no truth in that description at all. Given what I know of the two societies, it doesn't correlate with the people I have known there for the last three years, including myself.
