...was thinking of heading away for a few days around Christmas Day, with the wife. Is it a really nice and romantic and Christmassy, or crap because everything's shut?

I've only ever been to Paris on Christmas and while it almost never snows here (once in about 15 years) at least all the pubs and restaurants are open so it's possible to book a romantic Christmas dinner as a surprise for the wife.
