    Hi there,

For any of you working with an umbrella company, do you know what the situation is regarding claiming alcohol as a business expense. I'm not talking about taking the pee here, but at a genuine work event/business dinner, can you claim rounds of drink bought, or bottles of wine consumed with dinner?

    Thanks in advance!

If you are entertaining clients/employees on a recognised business social event then I think you can claim back.

I think the company may wish to see a list of the drinks ordered though if they are particularly stringent about re-imbursement. Beer and Wine/Champagne is usually OK, but exotic cocktails are not looked favourably upon and may require you to answer a few questions I think!

Probably best to just enquire to the desk that takes care of these matters and see the protocol. It differs from business to business.

I'm with an umbrella company (have a ltd company), so my employer doesn't pay expenses, the revenue does!

As far as I can recall, employee entertainment is tax deductible, client entertainment is not.

I think the purpose of that is to stop people from giving tax-deductible freebies to their buddies masquerading as "potential clients"

Client entertainment is non deductable. Only staff is.
I studied tax in one class college, not professional advice.

Yes you can claim entertaining clients (food & drink) as a business expense,
    it is not tax deductable

Entertaining staff is a business expense and tax deductable
