Are tax returns usually this painful?!

    In 2006 I contracted from Jan-Nov.
I used the same umbrella company to do my tax throughout 4 short-term contracts.

I've been doing my tax return for '06 with them and it's been dragging on nearly two months now.

They requested a P45 for every contract I was in, even though they must have all the details of the amounts I was paid, and how much tax I paid - because they did my tax!

Now they have come back to me saying they can't account for over 2000 euro of my earnings for the year. I've disclosed everything to them, p45's, p60, p21 etc and they tell me there is this mysterious sum missing.

I rang the revenue and told them this figure and they have no record of anything be it tax or a refund for that sum.

The company who are doing this for me are based in Cork but having noticed the person who's dealing with me only replies to my mails in the middle of the night and only once a week on average, I checked the headers and he/she is in Malaysia.

How long on average should this tax return business take? It should be simple because all I am claiming for is rent relief!

That's crazy. I did my own tax returns when I was contracting as self-employed and it was always pretty easy and straightforward, once I actually got down and did it (I did them online).
The tax office people were always helpful too.
I'd dump that umbrella company if you can. Easier to do it yourself by the sounds of things.

Doing it yourself is worth it if you have the time and are organised enough. That sounds like an utter mess, I hope it gets sorted out quickly.

Yes, I don't understand why they even need my P45's...wouldn't they have been the ones who issued them, seeing as they were doing my tax and processing my wages....?

I think I have to use them as I was down as a director of one of their umbrella companies :-(

    Really confused by all this!
