I don't know if this is the right forum...

I have an acer laptop at ´for the past 2 years. I have a problem at the moment and for quite a while in that the system will not allow mw to access the internet. Either dial-up or wireless broadband. The computer had been turned off for 4 months this summer and yesterday i turned it on again to go online and it did at first but it was so slow. I logged out and tried again and so far i cant get on-line at all. I have AVG antivirus and have scanned the computer and no threats have been found although it does highliht "kernel 32" to "change". I am no computer head so i have not got a clue. Could there be something preventing me getting on-line. I have also noticed some "glitches" like icons are slow to load and when i open some windows they close on their own. Like WTF??

I would really appreciate any help/suggestions as i know nothing about hardware software etc....

    Personally, I dont trust AVG.

Try Nod32 for a virus scan... http://www.eset.com/download/index.php (30 Day Free Trial)

Also, run HiJack this (Download from http://www.majorgeeks.com/download5554.html) and post the log file here.

    Try this

Download WinPFind3U.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind3u on your desktop.
    • Open the WinPFind3u folder and double-click on WinPFind3U.exe to start the program.
    • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
    • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
    • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Use the Add Reply button and Copy/Paste the information back here. I will review it when it comes in. If, after posting, the last line is not < End of Report > then the log is too big to fit into a single post and you will need to split it into multiple posts.

Very helpful comment, you may have a virus or some other similar issue, so just throw your laptop out and buy a mac, or install linux.... Genius

I would definitely run HiJack this as Sully said, post the log up here and we can take a look for you...

Also just going from what you have said it may be a Spyware issue as well as a virus, if you download spyware blaster and Spybot Search and destroy

Install update and run both of them, just to be sure.

    or you can run hijackthis
look through a long log , analyse it find the problem
fix it and get a while before you get it again

im jusy sayin , its easier to use ur acer for useful stuff like working on what u want not anti virus all the time

If someone improves their game there is no reason to get a virus again and again, as indicated above hijackthis is decent, but you have to know what you are looking for,

I'd keep my internet explorer completly up to date, have pop up blocker turned on and phishing filter turned on from the "Tools" toolbar,
I'd also run spybot put it advanced mode and have teatimer running,
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Keep this up to date it can help with watching the application layer and has free updates,.

I also dont find AVG bad at all, but if sully has another freebe that he says is better then I'd give it a go.

the main thing is to keep everything updated and get familiar with the processes that should and should not be running on your machine, check the processes by entering task manager,
    control+alt+delete
    Then click on processes

If something looks a bit dodgy type its name into http://www.processlibrary.com
it can give great info on a process indicating if it is dodgy or not.

I use the above and my PC is clean, it's all free (although I do donate to spybot everynow and then), there must be easier, simpler ways to do this but I found that getting to know what is running and not running on my PC is very important and in doing so you can keep things running very well.
Spybot gets a lashing on some forums, but in advanced mode i still think it is good, it is easy to enter your start up menu from spybot and you can temp stop or completly delete a start up application from starting when your PC starts, it will block this from starting up again and can help to prevent problems from returning once you have identified them.
Anyway I'm sure better advice will follow, but this works for me.
