HDD recorder with USB?

I'm looking for a gadget that will record to hdd from a sky box, with a usb port that will allow me to import movies from external sources, and a reasonable supply of codecs for mpg, divx, etc. Does such a beastie exist? Not quite ready fpr the htpc route yet.

Theres lots of devices that will do what you need, bar the sky recording. To record sky it needs an internal encoder as well as a way to control the sky STB.

Have look through the last three pages of posts, im pretty sure there are some examples of the media HD's in there.

A HTPC does not need to be expensive. An old P4/Athlon circa 1.6Ghz will do the job nicely.

Thanks. I'd still rather a purpose made box though. I'd read about the media hdds on this very forum, before making my post, and very nice they are, but they lack the crucial record facility.

There are a lot of hdd/dvd recorders that will record tv, and I assume they will thus record from sky (controlling sky isnt important for me). I just hoped that there might be one that could also import content via USB. I don't mind doing format conversions on the PC before transfer to suit whatever decoders are in the flash of the box.
