I'm travelling to Sydney in February to start a masters course and I'm trying to decide upon a stopover destination for the trip out. I'm thinking about flying out a week early and spending it in somewhere like Thailand but said I'd check on boards to see what destinations get recommended by experienced travellers.

Any tips at all would be really appreciated.

Malaysian airlines have an excellent deal at the moment. You fly via Kuala Lumpur and then you get two internal flights within Malaysia for free. We're going to KL for a few nights then flying to Borneo for 6 days. All you have to do is buy accommodation for a few nights from the travel agent (Austravel, in our case and it's €16 per night for a 3 star hotel). It's much cheaper than a lot of other airlines we've been looking at. We're flying to Wellington in New Zealand through Sydney and it's going to be €1150 all included. I'm sure it'd be cheaper to just fly to Oz. Could be a good bargain if you fancy Malaysai. We chose Borneo but there;s other destinations like Penang etc. The deal runs out at the end of October.

In 3 weeks im going away for 3 months to oz/nz

I used trailfinders and we're spending a week in beijing on the way there and a week in kong kong on the way back - both places meant to be amazing.

The other 2 options were bangkok and singapore. Singapore is meant to be just a big boring city and bangkok is not liked by some people and Im going to thailand next year so wasnt really an option.

Check wiki for travel guides for what to do in each city.

    Have a great trip!
