USB Dongle Woes

    Hi all,

I posted this in networking, but it seems very quiet, so maybe you guys can help.

I've been trying to set up a wireless usb dongle on a new dell machine running windows vista. The dongle is branded Canyon and I believe the model is RT73.

I have downloaded and installed the vista drivers for it, however, it still refuses to work properly. Sometimes it connects ok for a few mins then disconnects, sometimes it connects and reports local access only, and eventually it does not connect at all.

The signal strenght is fine, it has a minimum of good at all times and the network is unencrypted.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Any help appreciated, thanks in advance.

Are you using Windows' in-built wireless utility to connect or software that came with the device?

Try changing the channel used for your wifi from the router.

Did you sign up for it through the uni? They may block everyone until you fill out a form first. Usually want your MAC address.

Are you getting an IP address by DHCP?

I have it working on my laptop no problem, there is no sign up required, its just an open unencrypted network, just specify a proxy to get explorer and firefox working is all.

The IP is dynamically assigned each time its connected so don't think its a problem there, am pretty stumped by it.

Can you ping? Fire up Command Prompt and type:
    ping www.google.ie
    and hit return.

Seeing as you're using the Windows wireless utility, be sure to disable the one that was installed with the software [if there is one].

If the connection drops at random times, I'd be inclined to put the blame on another wireless device, like a cordless phone, a microwave, wireless video sender, etc. Not much you can do about that though.
