I finally have a digital SLR to augment my film system, and have been having lots of fun trying it out over the past few days. One of the things I have been trying was metering for the highlights in a scene, then bringing the shadows up using some of the Canon utilities that came with the camera, and merging a number of exposures to create a pleasing scene.

I just can't shake that 'fake' look that haunts so many of these types of image. I think I need to find a different RAW converter too, that DPP program isn't very subtle. Any suggestions?

That branch overhanging the sun has taken on a horrible blue hue, couldnt ditch this.

I know I ruined the road, but it's late and this is the best of three attempts at this, so for now it's going to remain ruined :)

I quite like it, although I know what you mean when you say "that fake look". I'l be honest, I haven't really had much experience playing around is PS too much, I'm fairly basic with it. As for DPP (with canon yeah?), I quite like it, although I do know what you mean about it not being too subtle. Use it sparingly

Maybe a ND filter would help? It'd stop the background from getting too bright.

I use a circular polariser for these types of shot and it can often be a godsend. Here's one I took today in the Phoenix Park. The tree is just to the right of the Magazine Fort you photographed.

I'm not saying this is perfect but it's way better than my pic without the polariser!

P.S. I clicked on the "insert image" icon at the top of this dialogue box and it's didn't work. Anyone know how to add a flickr image here?? Don't see anything in the stickies at the top.

[IMG][/IMG] is correct as per your original paste but take out the "<a href=""> code so that you just get the http:// bit continued as far as the .jpg bit!

    This should give you this;

Yep all you want to do is just insert the <img> tag between the

I do love the way a polariser affects skies alright. It's on my wanted list, shame I'm so broke from the initial expense of the camera itself :)

It clearly features in some of your Poolbeg shots, which I like by the way. Especially the B&W treatment of the pipes.

actually, i think this is a good example of the form; nice and glare-y, like staring into the sun would be.

    Thanks for the comments.

Looking forward to getting more chances to shoot and get to grips with the new kit, and more experience using CS3. I'm in "reproduce images of a certain style" mode at the moment until I'm comfortable with the camera and digital format.

Big lesson of the week sofar - expose for the highlights and worry about the shadows at home

What would be people's preferred tool for making inital exposure adjustments and RAW conversion?

By the way, it isn't a barracks. This is the infamous Magazine Fort.

I'd say there are some interesting photo opportunities inside those high walls... It's a shame they have to keep it gated.
