hi - am looking for a new set of speakers to replace bose 802's. Any suggestions?? need to be good (really clear and warm) with vocals and accoustic guitar; but sometimes a bass or keyboard might be DI'd through. it is also possible that a kit might be miked through at some stage.

    Anything. What's your budget?

i suppose 800 - 1500 for a pair (very roughly in that bracket ) ..... but tbh value for money and quality are more important to me than budget. i dont know much about speaker prices at the moment - been out of the game - looking for semi-pro quality i suppose. I sort of thought there might be a few industry standards out there. I have YAMAHA EMX 5016CF mixer

Ok that EMX is a powered mixer that gives out 500w per side @ 4ohm. It's not a lot of power to be running anything other than Vox & Guitars. You could look at EV ZX5 which has a 15" for handling bass instruments, but that puppy needs 1200w each speaker before it'll come to life.

Powered mixers are great for corporate stuff, school work and small acoustic gigs or vocal-only rock gigs IMHO. There simply isnt enough power to do Kick Drum mic'ing and get good results.

So anyway, you can look at any passive speakers that take your fancy and fit your budget, there are dozens of options. EV SX300 is the industry standard and you can do no wrong there. JBL MRX512M is nice, very lightweight too only 15kg. There's also HK Audio Premium range and dB Technologies new Arena range which is quite cheap but not total crap.

JBL JRX112 if you're really on a budget but they're not much better than Behringer or Thomann shop brand gear. I think I'd go with EV or JBL.

thanks for that - the evs might be what i'm looking for - i also like the idea of jbl - they always seemed reliable - will check them out

have you ever heard proel ? i heard of a system available with seperate tops and bins

Depends which system, I don't see much Proel stuff anymore but they are still around. Wouldn't be as good a resale value too.

I sincerely doubt it unless Bose have somehow managed to defy physics. Still though, that looks like a great HiFi.

No really, unbelievable. Never a Bose fan myself, but couldn't believe these things!

Well they don't publish their specs on the Bose site so already that's not a good sign. Sound waves are complicated physical things, without any mention of dB, ohms or watts, one really has no idea how that system would survive in a pro audio scenario.

Frankly I'd eat my shoe if that rig could reproduce a live band without spontaneously combusting.

But I must hear it in action for me own curiosity.

Lack of spec sheets with frequency response curves etc, along with simplistic marketing-speak such as "studio-grade effects" and "tone quality remains smooth and even" would lead me to believe that this product is a gimmick, tbh.
