Anti-social behaviour in cinemas

Haven't this discussed in a while (and I did search mods :) )

Any good stories? Ever punch or threaten a brave skanger and his mates?
Ever break someone's mobile? Or maybe you're quiet which is fine and let staff do the neccesary.

And any suggestions from staff on what can be done?

I rarely meet messers in Cineworld, Parnell St as I go early at the weekends, before 11am.
I don't mind people talking as I can tell them to STFU and I can give out to people distracting me with the mobile backlight by texting during their films.

But I can't do anything if the people in the row behind are kicking seats and causing the whole row of seats to vibrate. They don't need to be directly behind as they can distract me even if they are several seats to either side. And it's so hard to see who is actually doing it.

I certainly think anti-social behaviour is a factor and if parents bring their children to a animated film and there's trouble they may never return. So maybe spending more on security is justified.

Most of the times i've experienced it, its been groups of kids. Can't really say much to them because they won't listen and will probably get worse to spite you. And you can't really threaten them either. Best bet is to go to later showings as the daytime ones are often terrible for it.

I tend to go see a movie a week or 2 after it has been released. Empty cinema usually.

Me too. Saturday or Sunday morning shows are great as long as it's not a 'Die Hard' type film, in which case, I'd wait and watch it on DVD.

Yeah I waited a week to see 3:10 to Yuma and when I arrived at movies@swords at 7.30pm there was a huge crowd of teenage boys and girls in the lobby..I presumed they were going to see anything but a western..
Sitting beside an English couple and a restless kid moaning about the size of the cinemas in Ireland (3:10 to Yuma was in the smallest screen in the cinema, hardly representative of all cinemas in Ireland), the movie was just about to start when lo and behold about 20 teenage girls mostly and a few lads arrived in the cinema. You could hear the groans from the serious movie-goers. They started messing predictably, shouting up at the lads, chatting, giggling..and a bloke got up and talked to the ushers. A minute later 2 big bouncers came in and threw them all out. That was good. Pity the kid beside me was in "Why is that? and "Who is that?" mode.

From cinema goings here in Cork the one gripe I have is travellers in the cinema they never shut up and are constantly going in and out up and down the aisle, this was reported to management and theyre too afraid to do anything I stopped going to that cinema, apparently so do alot of other people.

Ah as a teen iI understand other teens being annoying, the amount of movies ruined for me by others talking/kicking seats is unbeilebable

The irony is the screen 1 movies when its packed are the best- no one ever messes, they know thier ushers there

I used to work in UCI in Tallaght and Sunday mornings were the worst for bad behaviour - the place would be packed from opening until around 4 o'clock. One group of kids were messing in the front row one day, they were reprimanded and shut up for the rest of the film. When the film ended and everyone left one of them had left a sh*t on the floor in the front row.

One of the staff had to pick it up with rubber gloves and throw it in a popcorn tub.

Been going there around that time myself recently. It's a great time to go if you haven't been out the night before - rarely any hassle, usually never packed (especially if you're there about two weeks after release date) and it's only a fiver!

I haven't really come across any anti social behaviour to be honest bar somebody lighting up in the cinema many years ago.

I don't mind talking so much as long as it's during say the ads or something. I'm guilty of that myself but when the film actually starts I like to watch without interruption.

I generally go to Blanch and surprisingly it's been relatively quiet.

I only ever go to the 8/9/10pm showing of movies anymore, rarely any kids in there at those times. I went into Storm Cinema in Limerick on a Sunday afternoon a few weeks ago to see Superbad, the majority of people in there were between 12 and 15.

I prefer going to the cinema at those times. Less of a queue too for tickets.

Yeah Im big fan of going Saturday mornings or a few weeks after its release date. I have no problems telling people to shut the fook up as im a pretty big guy so its fun.

I hate those parents who bring kids that are way too young for a movie to the cinema. Went to the 2nd LOTR movie and a family there with 3 childers under age of 6 and none of them shut their mouths I had a go a the parents telling them they shouldnt be bringing that age kids into a movie especially if they cant keep them quiet.

The there was 300 half way in when the fight scenes were going on and were that weird dude goes to the brothel owned by the bad guy two little childers wander in id say no older than 6 also the father wanders in after them and rather than take them out he sits down through probably the most gruesome part of the film.

Many a time I have told a group of skangers to shut the fook up though im not paying 11 odd euro to listen to any fooker ruin a movie on me.

Ah it really is brain twisting annoying.

Went to see Transformers in Athlone. Father and young lad sitting right behind me, young lad about 10 and still in the 'WHATS THAT','WHOS HE','ARE THOSE MY FEET' Stage. This is forgivable as hes only a nipper BUT the father was entertaining the questions and answering in normal volume voiceage. I bit my tounge for a length of time until I could hold it no longer....I administered the mightiest SHUSH! I ever did SHUSH. They shut-up for a while but feckin started again...........but then I got afraid in case there was a problem with the wee fella, once I had that in my head I felt really bad for SHUSHING!!!!

Great YoutUBE VID, Americans really can be that obnoxious in the pics.

The offender in the clip didn't sound American. The defecator in the front row wasn't tagged as one either. I once admonished someone as the credits rolled on "Unforgiven." During his ceaseless chatter while the film was on, I kept telling myself I wasn't going to play Clint Eastwood while a friggin' Clint Eastwood movie was playing. As I walked past to leave I couldn't help but lean down and tell him his conversation wasn't as interesting as he thought it was. Five minutes later he shot at me from his car as I was getting in mine. Fortunately, his shooting was as poor as his manners.

Seen loads of this, all in Liffey Valley, all from scumbags.

Few examples, throwing cans of beer, popcorn, full drinks, etc.. from the back, constant talking, mobile phone conversatons, one little prick flicking lit matches down at the people below....
He got a few digs from a tank of a man for that.
Babies and small children in movies that are no way suitable, crying, talking, kicking chairs.. etc.

im 19 and i know what you mean. Its generally the 12-16 bracket that dont shut up talking laughing giggling, i find girls are the worse. But cause of my young age i dont mind telling them ot shut it, and i dont mind fighting about it either, or grabbing someone and turfing them out myself.

Usually if you tell them to shut the hell up they do...sorted.

    Though this one time...nevermind :P

I really don't go anymore unless its something I really want to see, I'd say the next movie I'll go to is the next Batman movie, and I'll be going to the early morning show in Liffey Valley as you only get a couple of punters in at that show, as the scangers aren't up at that time, I also hate people eating around me or slurping drinks, it just wrecks my head.

Small tip, when I go to the cinema I always walk to the far side of the rows, as in the other side away from the entrance. I don't know what it is but there seems to be a lot less dickhead, people usually don't want to walk the whole way across the screen so its sort of less crowded. How anyone goes to see a film on a friday release in the evenings is beyond me. Personaly I think nachos should be banned from cinemas, I mean how can you enjoy a film when you're constantly looking down to dip in rubber melted cheese, all you do is piss people off within a 3 seat radius with you're crunching!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 256 ✭✭nij

Well, apart from the usual line of 10 skangers rustling crisps coming in 5 mins after the film starts to sit in the front row, I've experienced kids jumping around changing seats, kids constantly laughing and talking, and people talking on mobiles (like the clip here LOL), "Hello? Yeah I'm in da cinema".

One of the things though that pisses me of about some of the general public, is when they LEAVE 5-10mins before the end of the film! It's like they're thinking "Ok, the best bits are over...time to go". They leave when they feel their senses have been satisfied enough, and don't care to watch the ending. Ugh, brainless muppets like that really tick me off.

Personally, I like to watch the film to the very end. I also like to watch most of the credits. The cleaners don't respect this though, and I hate when the come in and turn the lights on the second they start.

I usually go to see films when they come out on Friday evenings, or if not, the Saturday or Sunday evenings; I can think of one occasion in the past few years when someone has disrupted a film for me by talking. Apart from that, I've had no hassle at all in any cinema I go to.

Now either I've just been exceptionally lucky or else it's something to do with Giruilla suggested - where you sit in the cinema. I often sit in the first few rows cos it's easier to get a seat when they haven't been assigned and cos I like being close to the screen. Messers tend to congregate towards the back, which suits me fine.

Need to get one of these for mobile phone users in cinemas:
    http://www.therawfeed.com/2007/09/uh-oh-now-anyone-can-jam-your-cell.html

And a flamethorwer for scumbaggery. :p

Had a couple of these. One time these prick skangars were sitting behind me and my friends. The were talking and 'Shut Up!' 'You shut da bleedin' fook up!' were exchanged between us until one guy at the front (we were at the back) Said loudly "Why Don't you all shut up!?!" Legend

And recently at '1408', bunch of 13-16 year olds came in and took up a whole row and started talking. Then one of them said 'Shut up Gabrielle' immediately followed by a 'Shut up Gabrielle' from EVERYONE in the screen.:D

In Japan everybody stays till the credits are over as a mark of respect for everyone that worked on the movie

I go to the cinema quite a bit (unlimited card for Cineworld in Dublin - brill!) and would say that truly anti-social behaviour in the cinema is something I haven't come across that much. One thing that does bug me is when people sit wherever they want in preassigned seating showings - how ignorant are these people?
When a showing has preassigned seating it usually means the showing is sold out or close to it. People who sit wherever they want will be moved! Because of Murphys Law though its usually after the movie has already started and is disruptive for everyone else.
The ushers in Cineworld are usually proactive about stopping this though.
