Driving to China - Is it possible?

OK so this may sound a bit on the cracked side, but I have been forming a vague notion of going on a huge roadtrip at some point in the next 2 years. Ideally I'd like to hop in my (yet-to-be-bought) camper/van, get the ferry to Le Havre, and go on the drive of a lifetime, if possible as far as China. Thing is I have absolutely no idea whether this is logistically possible...

The main queries which spring to mind are:
motor insurance - is it possible to be insured by your Irish insurance company while you drive half way around the world
visas/permits - are there (m)any countries that do not allow you to enter with your own motor vehicle
fuel costs - does the price of fuel (presumably diesel) vary much from country to country

Time would not be an issue - the trip could be done over 6 months if necessary giving plenty of time to stay for a few weeks at a time in countries en-route (really want to explore some parts of Russia in particular). The driving would be shared by 2 or 3 people. If it is possible, it would more than likely be a one-way roadtrip - flog the vehicle and get a flight back at the end of the trek..

If anyone here has any experience of going on long roadtrips across Europe/Asia you may have some ideas on my queries above and any other advice would be greatly appreciated..

    jAH
