Car Rental in South Africa

Myself and my boyfriend are travelling to South Africa in November. Can't wait!

I just have a question about car rental over there. I've been told that you really need a car to get around as the public transport isn't good there. I've found out that Tempest car rental is good so we'll probably go with them. However, in the terms and conditions it says you need a valid licence for a minimum of two years (Doesn't say that it has to be a full licence). My full licence is only valid a few months even though i've been driving for 5 years. My boyfriend has a provisional for 3 years. My question is does anyone know how strict they are? Will they know the difference between a full and provisional licence? Do you think we'll have a problem?

My friend was in ibiza recently and had no problem renting a car with a licence only valid a few months. But thats Ibiza.

We spent 3 months in SA last year and rented cars on provisionals many times, they don't seem to insist on full licenses anywhere we went

i don't think the issue is if you can get a car or not, because they'll always be happy to take your money. The issue is if you get into an accident, the insurance companies will take you to the cleaners, as you will have basically lied in order to get the car. The rental company will not be liable as you will have signed a paper with the terms and conditions, even though you didn't meet some of the terms. very risky in my opinion. Same goes for your friend in ibiza- he/she's very lucky nothing happened, mostly the way some people drive over there.

From what I have seen on the telly you just go upto the first traffic lights you find outside the airport and stick a gun through the window of the car you want and the valet driver hands it over :D:D Sems to happen frequenty over there.

The terms and conditions don't actually say full licence. This is what it says exactly on the website. So I'm not sure you'd actually be lying when you get the car.

    Drivers

A valid, unendorsed licence must be produced by the hirer or authorised driver.
Minimum age for hirers or authorised drivers is 23 years of age and the drivers licence must have been valid for a minimum of two years.

that's what it means though. any hire company, is the same. you need a full drivers licence and 2 years driving on it. A provisional licence is not valid abroad. i'm just saying it's easy to get a car and as long as nothing happens, great, but if something goes wrong, it could go very wrong.

i'm certainly not saying do it or don't do it, i'm just letting you know one of the risks
