What is the procedure for prosecution if speeding and observed by a handheld garda speed gun? Do they stop the driver or is a fine in the mail? What if only 3km over limit?

    Thanks

They usually send out a fixed charge notice, and if this is not paid then they usually put a summons in the post. However, they can still stop someone, especially if they suspect that they are driving dangerously/without insurance/while intoxicated etc.

What if only 3km over limit?

Still illegal, but gardai have discretion. Ask the motoring forum, as I think there is something about a speedometer showing a speed a few miles faster than the speed the car is actually travelling at.

Depends on the kit available to them. If they have the fancy gun that also takes a pic of the offending vehicle they'll issue a FCP. If they've got the standard gun they'll pull the offender in, show them the gun's reading & take details.

sounds like a stupid question but can the guards clock a speed if you are coming around a bend in the road or can they only do it on a straight stretch of road?

Once the gun does the reading - it doesnt really matter id imagine.

Iv been pulled over and "told" my speed but not showen it on his gun - and it was just as I came around the bend. ;)

Iv seen them hide in behind trees in such a way they can see you but you cant see them - at least, until its to late.

One of the machines uses a laser so it happens at the speed of light. It goes something like this: they send out two beams and measure the distance between them. Since light travells at 299,792,458m/s it needs to be very fast to measure a small distance (small in relative terms is a few metres). The gun sends out hundreds of these beams to get an average speed figure. Even so the gun takes a snapshot so quickly that no human could observe it (at least, that's how I think it works).

Good, because such flagrant disregard for the law would result in an instant banning.
