Escaping a car park

Has anyone escaped a car park behind someone else?

    As in:

waiting until someone else is queueing to feed their ticket into the exit machine,
    driving very close to them
    - then whipping out behind before the barrier closes behind them.

i recommend it if you want that heady feeling of rebellion...

Once by accident, was only half thinking and went straight out after the car. A minute or so up the road I noticed the car park ticket on the dash.

Most annoying part was I had already paid the ticket.

Just reminds me of that bit in Mr. Bean with the wheelie bin :D

I've always wondered if this was possible...but I'd be too cowardly to try because I'm convinced the barrier will come crashing down and split the car in two :o

there is a car park in drogheda, which has once of those barriers but it is free to park there after 6pm, so leave you car until after 6pm and drive out without paying - most pointless car park in the world

in my tesco, the barriers go up automatically after 6pm and stay up until 8am the next morning.

    people still pay.

    i don't get it.

I woulda thought if the barrier hits anything on the way down, then it automatically goes back up... for safety, like -- if someone was walking under it.

    I've never done it anywho.

People are weird. Years ago I lived in Dublin. In the area of our flat there were 2 ATMs, both BoI, about 50 yards apart. You could see one from the other.

One always had a queue of about 20 people waiting to get cash. The other was always, always, completely free. For 2 years this happened, and nobody copped on. Mad.

On topic: yeah, did it by mistake once when not thinking, like c-13. There's plenty of time. Also always do it when in London - ride the Tube all day for free! :D

My father, being a Scottish pensioner, has devised the best way for getting free parking the world.

He wanders down to the entrance of the carpark on his way back from the shops and get's a new ticket from the barrier machine. He then go's back to his car and use's his new ticket to get out for nothing as most carparks give around 10mins grace in case the place is full and you can't find a space.

On the couple of times he's been sussed he's played the senile pensioner card and got away with it anyway.

I've noticed that a few of the machines in Dublin read your numberplate now as well now, presumably to stop you doing what my Dad's up to.

some workmen in a truck tried tailgating me out of a carpark in college last year - the barrier came down and smashed on the front of the truck. they just carried on and lots of people got to leave for free!

I've seen this happen, I think its jury hotel christchurch, It was a few years ago, but theres plenty of signs around saying do not walk under barriers, this guy started walking under one as a car had exited said car park.. it knocked him out and gave him a good war wound aswell! he felt like such a tool!

They sure do, somebody in front of me on the toll bridge ran through after the guy in front paid and the barrier was on the way down, but moves back up as soon as it detects another car going through.

Makes sense, if you had a trailer or something, then it would be the same effect wouldn't it?

Seen this on the toll bridge once... Barrier came down and hit the truck but the barrier just bounced off it. Passed the truck parked up ahead on the hard shoulder, the guy was checking for damaged but there wasn't a single mark.

So, something to think about for all you toll bridge users.

I saw a guy in a Tralee car-park couple of years ago. He drove in, couldn't find a space, then had to put 2 Euro in the machine to get out.

I'm way too chicken to try that! I have often thought about it since seeing the Mr.Bean episode but knowing my luck the car in front would be an off duty garda or something and I'd be shamed trying to save €2:( I guess I'm not much of a rebel!

Thought your video was gonna be this one below. Watch idiot number 2 with the kid in the back. Also, idiot number 3 puts a nice spiderweb into the windscreen with his mush.

That second idiot could have crushed those pedestrians if the car spun around a little more. Ouch for the third idiot.

heard of a biker going through the tollbridge and his pillion catching the barrier, knocking her clean off the bike

long story short, the settlement bought her a bike of her own.. ;)

Seen it at the toll bridge a few times too, cars tailgating the one in front. See load of bikers drive up the left side of the queue and drive straight through the small gap the barrier leaves on the left. Also see bikers hiding on the left side of vans and trucks as they go through.:D
Personally I wouldn't have the nads to take the chance.

I did it in Stephens green car park. My card was messed up and I tried to go through one gate, it didn't work there, so I reversed out and pulled in to the other lane behind another car. Kinda knew my card wouldn't work in that one either, so I saw the barrier go up in front of the car ahead of me and zipped out behind it. I guess I could have gone to the office and asked for another card, but thought it was worth the risk doing it my way:)

Getting out of carparks is never a problem to me, see I drive a Landcruiser with Roofracks, theres not one carpark in the city that I can fit into let alone ger out of.

I shall be dustin off one of me smaller cars at the weekend to try this out tho :D

I think some of the barriers have sensors to tell if another car is passing through and it keeps the barrier up.

You do this at your own risk though and in the knowledge that it is illegal.
