long term storage: dvd or hd?

    Which would be better for long term storage of quite important documents and files, DVD or an external HD? I may need quick access to these files at any moment, and I expect there to be quite a lot of them by the time I'm done. Or is there another option I've not thought about?

    If the data is going to be used and edited often, i'd suggest a usb hard drive. It may be no harm to do weekly backups from that to DVD then. Double redundancy. :)

    It'll be used, but not edited. So saving it to DVD is pretty much as far as it needs to go.

    DVDs should also be considered to have a finite lifetime once burned. A HD's lifetime would be much higher. If data is really important , back up HD to a DVD as MarkR says or use RAID1

    DVDs can last a century in the proper conditions and Hard drives can crash etc. Anyway, if you need quick access I'd go for a USB HDD and back up to DVD. Theres a 500GB HDD in Tesco for 120 euro I believe.
