Need to transfer the emails from the outlook on the old pc to the outlook on the new pc , any easy way to do this ?

If I want to do it in outlook express I just copy the .dbx files over , any thing like that for outlook ?

Outlook is far easier than Outlook Express.

All of the mail is stored in a .PST file. All you do is copy this file to the new machine, then attach it to Outlook.

What version of Outlook is on both machines?

    OK....

Some guesswork going on here. I don't have access to either of them, but they work quite similarly to Outlook 2003.

On the old machine, go to File > Data File Management...

This will give you a single file or maybe a list of files. These are your PST files.

Make a note of the names and locations of these files, then copy all of the files over to the new machine. You will need to close Outlook to copy them.

I think then on Outlook 2007, the procedure is similar IIRC > File > Data File Management.. > Click Add... and select a file you've copied over. Do this for each of the PSTs.

You will still have to set up all your accounts and rules again.

The only problem you have is that Outlook usually sets up an empty default PST that it uses for new mail. So in order to use your existing PST as the default Inbox, you need to go to Tools > Account Settings > View or change existing, then select the old PST under "Deliver new email to the following location".

    Finsh and restart Outlook.

Outlook 2007 isn't drastically different to Outlook 2003, just some of the menus have been tweaked and the editor looks different.

    Thanks for that .

I like to go and search the web first as the extra bit of work can help to make it stay in my head but couldn't find anything that seemed to cover what I was looking for . This was all for my sister who had a new pc installed at work , about 15 minutes after I phoned to ask which versions she was using she phoned back to say that all her old mails were now transferring over to her new pc , she had no idea how this was happening , I thought about taking the credit , explaining it off as telepathy but I don't think she would buy it .

I tried that on my own pc and it worked fine , not as easy as the copy and paste of outlook express , but I have bookmarked it for future reference .

    Thanks again

    John

Heh, I was assuming that you were doing it on a standalone machine.

In her work they're probably using MS Exchange. Using Outlook with exchange is really where its whole feature set shines. Exchange stores all of the mail on the server. So there's no need to copy anything across. You just log onto the new machine and assuming that Outlook's been configured right, your mail and most of your settings will be on the new machine straight away. The "transferring" bit would be Outlook downloading all of her mail to cache it locally.

outlook has an unpleseant habbit of archiving email
so do a search for *.pst on the old machine
outlook data stamps them each time it uses them so live ones will have todays date.

you can't copy pst files if outlook is or has been open, log off and on again
