i think available only with sky freesat (yellow house) card

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

They were never FTA. Only available with a UK viewing card.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71,184 ✭✭✭✭L1011

It was pseudo-FTA on analogue (VC-soft), just needed the right box... so saying "never" isn't 100% right ;)

Channel 5 is FTV (Free-to-view) not FTA (Free-to-air) so you'll need a UK viewing card to get it...

Which sucks, would be nice to be able to get Monday Night Football...

As Mossy said, Channel Five is only available with a UK Sky viewing card and digibox.

Try leaving the card in the receiver for a few days.

    12.304 Horizontal 27500 2/3

It is possible that there are still old FTA cards out there that will decode the channels without the EPG being properly configured (Channels 103-105 missing)

Or a UK Sky viewing card and a Dragon Cam in a non-Sky box. Some Dreamboxes also work with the UK Sky viewing card afaik.

    NFL?

I see it's live next Monday night anyway at 01.30

Yes, Monday Night Football is on five every Monday night. Sky Sports show the same game at the same time. The football being NFL of course.

Milan derby on Sunday, anyone know if its possible to watch it? Online/Channel 5/Dodgy Italian channels/Channels from Botswana that you can tune in etc?

    Hook or crook basically

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

www.Bet365.com should have it. They show lots of Italian football for free. You will need to register to watch it though (free to do)

Edit - They are showing it live.

Bumping old threads is probably not the way to go.

Milan game is on Channel 5 on Sunday at 13:30?

Try looking for FTV cards on buyandsell.ie and watch out for people trying to fleece you (although at this short notice you won't have much choice)

    Edit:
You could watch it free on bet365

None really, atm. Rumoured to go FTA some time in later months for Freesat, but nothing in concrete that I'm aware of.

    must try this overnight tonight.

I got a UK card a few yrs ago and it used to work for Ch5 immediately when you put it in, but I tried it there and it says you have to subscribe.

If it works overnight tonight, I think I'll sell it on as I have no use for it anymore. Any idea what a decent price to charge for it would be? I paid €75 about 6yrs ago for it

Considering it is only useful for five, Sky Three and Channel 4+1 then I would think you would be lucky to get a fiver for it.

If it activates again, you could sell it.
15-20 euros about the most you could charge now.
Maybe less now that Channel 4 is FTA and Five will follow suit soon.

i would say even worthless. Remember you can't sell these on ebay as sky officially owns the card, not you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,451 ✭✭✭Onikage

In theory, sky could put good programming on Sky Three. That would put some value back into the FTV cards (and Freeview although less people can get it). Or they might do something else. Or not. Time will tell. This is not a good time to sell an FTV card, unless it's to someone who badly wants Channel 5.

I guess, that in the UK at least, Sky will relaunch Freesat from Sky, where you don't need a card, the FTA channels have a good EPG (hiding the unsubscribed channels) and will likely allow Sky + boxes to record the FTA channels, they might even launch one or two more FTA channels exclusive to Sky boxes.

They will need to do this as they won't want people replacing their Sky boxes with these new Freesat boxes. If people keep their old Sky boxes, they can always easily re-subscribe to Sky or get the PPV channels, but not if they dump their Sky boxes. So it is in Sky's interest to make Freesat from Sky atttractive.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

If they do that for Sky+ boxes it would be great. Imagine being able to use the full functionality of the Sky+ box I bought for full price.

    It's unlikely.
A large income is Sky outrageous charges for EPG. Which costs them almost nothing. If a FreeSat channel is not on the Sky EPG, they have a problem. They are unlikely to get a licence to allow Sky box to use Freesat EPG system.

A second large income is NDS security. Which costs nearly nothing (NDS & Sky both part of Murdoch empire).

They may add more channels to the FTV card and offer some FTA channels unconnected with BBC/ITV "free" encryption and "free epg". Thus limiting Freesat.

    Even more than this.

If you remove your sky card, Channel 5 now shows up at 105 as do all the other sky channels.

BBC 3 and BBC 4 are now appearing on the Irish EPG also at 229 and 230.

You can watch Channel 5 by manually adding the channel, as it is broadcast free-to-air.

    Use the following settings:

    Frequency: 10773
    Polarisation: Horizontal
    Symbol rate (Mbaud): 22.0
    FEC: 5/6

    Works in Rep of Ireland
