Sky HD box dead? Please help

    Hi all

All out of a sudden my sky HD box stopped working yesterday. It has no picture or sound but everything else worked - program info/banner, EPG, sky interactive etc.

My box is connected using HDMI via a HDMI switching amp. I tried connecting direct to TV using scart and was getting the same problems. Also tried the usual unplugging-wait-try again crap with SKY.

Called sky technical help yesterday and went through all the same process; rebooting, reversing HDMI cable, unplugging-plugging LNB connection etc - but no luck. Engineer booked for Tuesday.

The thing is my box is 2 weeks out of warranty, and I have to pay an engineer callout of €100 plus whatever repair is needed:eek:

Has this ever happened to anyone before? I'm not happy about having to bear costs for repair etc. Can't imagine NTL will charge you when the box fails after a year?

Please help. I'm not sure if I want to go ahead with the engineer call, or even continuing with SKY at this moment.

Thanks for reading. Any input is much appreciated

With Sky you own the equipment, with ntl you don't. You should have considered this before you signed up for Sky.

Ok relax...ring Sky tell them to fix it. They say €100. You say you will cancel account if not free. They say please hold and I transfer you to cancelation. You then say the reason for cancel is because they want to charge you €100 repair. They then put you on hold and offer you half price callout. You say nope I want it for nothin or I cancel. They then say ok, we won't charge you and give you a callout date.

    The End.

To do a firmware upgrade :

    1. Unplug box from wall outlet for two minutes
    2. Connect the HD box to TV via scart
    3. Locate the backup button on the top of the box
    4. Whilst keeping the backup button pressed re-insert the power cord.
    5. The front of the box should light up with four lights
    6. Depress the backup button.
    7. A message will appear on screen saying upgrading system software do not unplug.

When software upgrade is complete the box will switch back onto standby..leave for a min then unplug again for 2 mins and switch back on..It will take approx 2-3 mins for HD box to warm up...

    Hope that works for you,

So as you know, if you're advertising a business venture, it's not allowed and can be a bannable offense.

I would also advise removing your email address from public board, and PM'ing the person instead. Leaves you open to spam, etc.

    Thanks for the info

I did exactly that and threatened to cancel my subscription. Put me on hold and next minute a man says "..for your inconvinience we'll arrange a free engineer callout..."

Guys is coming tomorrow and lets hope all will go well!
