Help with AVG wanted please

Please can someone advise me what to do. I have Norton Internet Security on my Packard Bell PC (have always used Norton) and everything is so slow lately. Takes average of 6 or 7 mins from switching on to actually being able to click on the broadband icon and have it connect. I go and make tea and put the washing on, just like dial up days of old.

When I am online I get non-responding programmes most times I try and close a screen down, especially if I have windows media player on as well, its as if the system just can't cope with 2 things at once, its very frustrating. I do only have the slowest broadband connection at present but the problem with start up is before I'm actually online so I'm not sure going up to the next connection speed will help with that?

Even the windows task manager wont' shut the non-responsive programmes down, I've had that go non-responsive on me too! I end up having to log off and back on all the time.

Someone I know thinks it may be due to Norton Security and suggests taking it off and installing AVG and says "I will be amazed at the difference". To be honest Norton isn't stopping any spam emails at all lately even though it is updating my virus protection so I was considering changing to something else.

I've looked at AVG online and its seem ok but will it speed my system up do you think? I don't want to be swapping security systems if there is something else I'm doing wrong.

I don't have many documents on file, a few dozen photos but not hundreds. I do have MP3 rocket player installed to download music but its not running in the background, I make sure its closed down. I do regular disc clean ups and delete cookie plus disc defragments when needed, its just so damn slow and I have to do something or I'll go mad.

Any advise will be welcome - thank you

I would listen to your friend

When you remove Norton, your PC should speed up a hell of a lot. Use this Norton Removal Tool though

Norton is a huge resource hog. Steer clear of it as well as McAfee. Both have similar issues when it comes to slowing down your boot up time.

    McAfee not being as bad..

I personaly dont like AVG Anti Virus - iv never found it that good at removing (never mind finding) viruses.

I personally recommend Eset NOD32 - you get a 30day free trial to see what you think. There also about to release a security suite, similar to Norton and McAfee - so you will have virus & spyware protection, firewall etc.

There are other good anti-virus programs out there to, such as Kaspersky. Iv used it in the past and was very pleased with it. :)

Norton, McAfee, and Trend Micro's PC-cillan are resource hogs. I use Kaspersky and hardly know it's in the background running.
