Carbon Copy Cloner

Ok, this has been annoying me for a while but I've never really sought out an answer before. When I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my MacBook's hard drive to an external USB2 drive, everything seems to go OK. No error messages, and everything seems to be there when I browse the backup in the finder.

But there's a discrepancy in the amount of space each is taking up - the backup seems to take up less space than the original, by a good 10 gigs. Is this normal or is something wrong, does anyone know?

Some things might not copy over, perhaps like the Operating System.

No, I set it to do a complete Clone, and all the hidden OS folders are there /dev, /etc etc.

Does right click and Get Info report the same? I seem to recall somebody having a problem before with the Desktop item info reporting the wrong data.

Yeah I looked into that, it was the same. Oddly enough I did another sync and now while there is still a discprepancy, it's smaller. Meh, I'm not too worried. I managed to restore all my files and any preferences I wanted from a similar backup before when I upgraded my HDD. If the unthinkable happened I'd probably use the opportunity to do a clean install of the OS and do the same again.

Perhaps the external drive is formatted with a different block size?
