Lived in Conamara and the only ones i was surrounded by seemed to be what are termed 'mountainy sheep' i.e. white shaggy coats , black or speckled faces and horns that curn about the ears. Not sure if theyre native Irish though - they appear more Scottish than anything else and seem really hardy.

Yup- Galway sheep are a recognised breed eligible for special payments under the REPS scheme. They are entitled to a payment of €200 per Livestock Unit per annum, for people actively breeding them (note: a sheep is counted as 0.15 livestock units).

There is also a Galway Sheep Breeders Association - their contact number is 087 9486530, if you'd like to give them a call. They are also listed in the 2007 Sheep Breeders directory link here

The Galway Sheep seem to be big in the UK (if you do a Google you'll find quite a bit of info). I understand that they are trying to encourage the breed here through AI - not sure of the details. Will let you know if I find anything.
