Hey guys just a heads up to say that today was the last day of service for the Alouette 3 in Irish Air Corps Service, sad day indeed such a true workhorse and instantly recognised and loved by all.

I will miss her alot as they held a special place in my heart too and saved countless Irish and other peoples lives, sometimes going out when it wasnt in any way advisable.

A picture of mine which I think stands out:

They flew right over Dun Laoghaire harbour end executed a turn before heading off towards Bray direction. Fantastic formation of five choppers in a triangular shape.

Pardon my ignorance but what aircraft are going to take up their workload/role?

Agusta Westland AW139. Four have already been delivered, two more are on order. A major addition to the Air Corps fleet.

Lovely shots. It's a pity to see them go.

Well, I guess it's official now from my point of view, anyway. In relation to my post here......

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=54058517&postcount=52

..... about Alouettes acting as top cover for prisoner escorts, an escort came into Portlaoise yesterday and it was one of the new EC135s that was doing top cover instead of the Alouettes I was used to. So, I guess that's it then, it really is all over now. :(

Looks like I've got a whole new engine/rotor/fenestron noise to get used to buzzing over my head now instead! :D At least they're a damn sight quietier than the Alouettes used to be. Having said that, though, I will miss that loud, metallic sort of "screech" the Artouste engine used to make. It sure was distinctive and it meant you'd know an Alouette was coming long before you'd see it! :D
