Drum Kit Help!

    Hello,

I desperately need some help buying some new drum shells.

I have about 2200euro to spend on some new shells and a snare.

I play in a heavy death metal band ( influences Cryptopsy, Cannibal Corpse, Death etc...) so two bass drums would be nice.
But I also play rock ( Faith no more, Alice in Chains etc...) and some old progressive stuff (Rush, Camel, King Crimson Etc..) and a whole other bunch of stuff.

I'd like an aluminum snare for that real poppy/harsh sound. I don't care on the material used on the shells as long as its versatile for different sounds.
Two toms and a floor tom is a necessity

I've been thinking along the lines of pearl masters but I'm not sure how much I cab afford it. I've heard some Sonors and liked the sound but no one I know has owned one.

Any ideas or any help would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

TBH most of what you hear from the DM side of things is triggers and samples so you can't really gauge the quality of kit, if you're into that sound buy some triggers and a brain and run in into the PA, you could have the ****test kit in the world and no-one would be able to tell. If you're into the straight up rock stuff, any decent kit will do tbh, just make sure you know how to tune. Check out PDP (a budget line of DW) which are reasonably priced but sound superb by all accounts, you can get shell packs from the likes of thomann. Spend a bit extra on your snare, it's the key to your sound. Maybe even consider getting two snares, one metal shell and one wooden shell, so you can refine your sound to a more agressive Metal band sound or a smoother rock sound. I spent a good while in some shops trying all sorts of snares and the Birch Pearl Masters (BRX) was the winner, I had a steel snare before. It just sounded the best to my ears, probably the closest to a metal drum but with a wooden shell. I know a guy with a Pearl maple floating snare which has quite a sharp and metallic sound with maybe just a little bit less of the harshness of a full metal snare. Again, tuning is the most important thing though, there are a lot of guys with mega expensive kits in this country, but very few of them can actually tune drums and there are guys with **** drums who can tune who sound so much better.

They're not as bad as the guys with the expensive kits... they're like the guys with PRS's who can't play... I hate those guys :p

    Howdy,
....maybe try Sonor's new force 3007 kits..excellent build, superb finish, full maple shells, brilliant hardware and for your money you will get the size kit your after. I have the previous model of that kit and will hopefully trade in for a nice new shell set of 3007's soon,....can;t recomend them highly enough, after 5 years of serious poundings my kit still looks newish!!,,clean and great sounding *aint that right Doc.J.?! ;)*
Anyway thats my 2 cents worth, if your looking for a metal snare thats a touch different but has great crack and also warmth...try a Copper snare, most drum makers do them...I have a nice 14/5 Slingerland model and its an excellent snare...havent used it lately ,,being spoiled with the famous Bamboo and cherrywoods I was lucky enough to get...but the Copper is an excellent snare for sure.

hope ya get what ya need...ciao' amigo.....Baggio.......

Sonor kits are a bit too expensive for the kind of sound you'll be looking for,Pearl masters is ideal, but noting that pearl are generally a deeper sound than their counterparts,Yamaha/premier/Tama etc
once you go above a certain level of quality/price on most makes, the difference becomes less about whats best and more about different tastes and styles.the general profiling of the brands are pearl= mainly rock, sonor mainlt jazz, yamaha = main allrounder, tama = mainly metal/rock.but this is down to stereotype profiling,ie my favourite drummer uses a "xyz" so that must be the kit I use to sound like him....when in fact many of the other makes of the same price/quality could reproduce the sound the same or even better!I have kits by most major brands and I don't generally mind which I use so long a the sizes, wood type, heads and tuning are appropriate for the style of music or size of venue.part of the confusion is that the difference between a makes best kit and their worst kit can be huge,so to say that one make is better/worse than another is like apples and oranges.
I'd stay away from the second bassdrum as its a huge expense for a burden that won't hold its value, maynot fit on most stages or in most cars and can be achieved by a double pedal.
PS I have a pearl masters custom for sale(as i have two),22,12,14 (you could just add an extra 16")and loads of snares, maybe the pearl freefloater alluminumum would suit.I assume you have all your hardwear and cymbals already?
