Sorry if this is the wrong forum, seemed a likely place to ask.

Is it normal that you have to give your correct address when making a transaction online using Paypal, I made a payment, the company accepted it then said their system flagged it as a possible fraud attempt as I didn't give the same address as is on my Paypal account ?

The transaction didn't require anything be sent to me so I didn't see why I should supply my real identity details, but now the companies asking for a copy of my passport or some identification with my address on it, sounds a bit dodgy to me?

Usually is...PayPal have been known to sting sellers if they don't ship to the buyer's PayPal address and the buyer reports the item as not arrived.

Is PayPal asking you for your details or the seller? If you the transaction is completed and you got your "item" then I'd probably tell them where to stuff it. If it's PayPal, then you'll probably have to cough up those details before you can continue using your PayPal account.

Its the seller who's asking, but according to my paypal details they already have my money, thus my confusion, I'm not asking them to mail me anything.

AFAIK the seller isnt covered if he sends the item to an address that isnt your verified paypal address.

Im with you on being reluctant to hand over the details. Im careful to the point of paranoia that way. Have you had the item/product you were paying for? If yes you dont need to do a thing, but if no, Id get to the bottom of why they need your address. I can see how a company might be careful tho, to avoid chargebacks. Maybe they're just as paranoid as the rest of us, and they're making sure youre not using a hijacked account. Ask them if confirming a line of the address or a house number would do, maybe?

I'd be very very wary about sending personal details to a company I had purchased from. I know PayPal sometimes ask for documents like that but that is because they are the one taking the payment directly and so could need the information depending on the situation but as your seller is being paid by PayPal he should not need it, especially as no item needs to be sent. Is it a reputable company?

That's very strange. Since Paypal handle the transaction it is only them who should verify your address etc. You're paying this company for a service so there's no need for them to have your address. I've paid for services with Paypal before and never given over my address to the recipient and never had any problem with it. If the money has already gone through and you're not waiting on any physical item from the company then that's that. I'd reply to them and ask why they need your address when they don't actually need it and the money is already theirs.

If they get arsey about it then contact Paypal and say you feel their actions are highly questionable and you want to reverse the payment. Do this through their dispute panel.
