I want to buy an external hard drive, but one that also acts as a media player so I can leave it hooked up to the TV to watch divx movies etc, one with a remote control and all that jazz. Thing is, there is no PC in the room where the TV is - currently we transfer the movie on to a laptop and hook the laptop op to the TV. What I want is a media player hard drive that either connects directly into my wireless router via RJ45 or operates completely weirelessly - however the router is beside the TV to lan connection is fine.

So far this one looks pretty good: http://cgi.ebay.ie/Freecom-Wireless-Network-500GB-HD-Media-Centre-Player_W0QQitemZ290160422262QQihZ019QQcategoryZ16178QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

    Anyone got any better suggestions?
    Thanks

This enclosure from Maplin is nice. You can record too. Wired ethernet only but you could use a wireless bridge.

How about the cheap option of XBOX with XBMC installed?
Superb bit of kit, better than most standalone commercial units.

The xbox is no where near as good as standalone commercial units. With the xbox you are very limited to the type of file types you can play so you end up converting anything before you can watch it. Where as with the media player hard drives they play most formats especially say divx and saves you having to convert, plus he would need an xbox if he doesnt have one. The cheaper option of buying an xbox or the hard drive is certainly the hard drive.

    you should look here

i bought this one and its great only think is its not network enabled so you have to connect it directly to your tv to watch something or to your pc to use it as a drive. Very good good tho if the network thing isnt a key issue but they also sell the freecom one you were looking at or you could get this and then just buy any IDE hard drive you wanted to slot into it yourself

You obviously have never used or have seen an xbox with XBMC. It can play a much broader range of file types than ANY commercial kit plus you can run scripts, play streaming media, play emulators.....
The downside is that you need to firstly get an Xbox1 and then mod it. It is a bit bulky and noisey but when you see it in action you will be blown away :)

I actually have an xbox and have used it for streaming but by XBMC i thought you meant the way you use the media centre extender on the xbox and use a program like Zune on your pc. This only lets you use wmv files which is why i mentioned the conversion. This would be the standard way to do it on an xbox without the extra hassle of modding it. Thats cool though about XBMC,but now not alone do you need an xbox you need to get it modded aswell!! way too much hassle for my liking :D
