Software "pedals"

    Hi all,
Apologes if this is the wrong forum. I've been playing guitar for a very short while and taking a few lessons. I have an electric with a small 10W amp but no effects pedals. The questions I am about to ask may be very stupid, if so apologies.
Is there some way I can plug my guitar into my PC and have some software assist me with the effects or is this completely off the wall?
    Kippy

There are many software effects units out there designed specifically for guitar. Check out Amplitube, or NI Guitar Rig if you want the necessary hardware included too.
