Dont know if im posting in the right place?? Hey, im in Ncad up the road from trinity and I was wondering how much it would cost me as a student to join trinity gym for a year?

Also, word on the street is Ncad students have an affiliation with all trinity societies? I was in the trinity swimming soc last year and wasnt 100% if I was allowed actually be in there legit? But there was a few in waterpolo from DIT and DCU. As a non member would I still be allowed attend swimming pool socs without a tcd student card?

    thank you all

I can't ever recall any partnership arrangement with NCAD and TCD tbh, so I don't think that you would be allowed to attend any society meetings without paying the membership fee of DUCAC/whoever. Officially.

As for joining the gym: http://www.tcd.ie/Sport/index.php?nodeId=5&title=Membership

cool, this is good knowledeg sir. Affiliations have never been confirmed but for some reason all graduating ncad students receive their degree ceremony in trinity.. Im confused. 320 for the year as a non member is pretty dam cheap! unless im reading it wrong of course.

Ditto. I think the connection is an urban myth connected perhaps to the RDS/University Philosophical Society split.

The €320 fee quoted is for non-students playing for clubs. So I'd say you'd have to pay the €320 to join the Swimming Club, if you're officially allowed to do that, which I doubt it, because non-students/staff can't join societies. I think you'd have to get a private membership, which I presume is more than €320.

Staff can join clubs. Back when I played in the Squach Club really all the members where lectures or the like. I think anyone can join a club if they are a member of ducac so afaik even graduates. Societies are another question...

well in fairness it's probably one of those things that go back to old books saying staff can't be official members of socities. i don't think that in actual fact prevents lecturers from playing squash during the times the squash courts are being used by the squash club.

Sorry low, I should have said "non-students/-staff". Staff can join societies. What I mean is people from outside "the Trinity community".

You could join as a member of the public. You would not be entitled to a student or staff discount.

There is no 'swimming soc'. I think you mean the DU Swimming Club. I certainly hope you weren't racing for them. Given what you've written about yourself, you almost certainly wouldn't be eligible for membership of DUCAC, so I can't see how you would be eligible to race for DU Swimming Club.

Anyway, you've raised an interesting point.

Trinity is full of 'hanger-onners'. Should non-students be allowed to join Trinity clubs, societies, publications and union bodies?

What about so-called 'years of grace'?

I know in the boat club, they refuse to entertain any non-students: there's no point because:
    i) they can't race in the Temple Challenge Cup at Henley without being a full-time student (this excludes staff , post-docs, lecturers, etc.)
ii) they can't race at university championships

Why give out expensive facilities and coaching to people who can't contribute to the sporting reputation of the institution?

When a club books out facilities, you have to be a member of the club to use them. Try going for a swim after 9pm and you'll see this in effect.

I'm not a student of trinity and I'm a member of DUCAC (AFAIK).

Why shouldnt they if they are contributing?

What about non sporitng roles such as arranging stuff, training or generaly helping out.

I know alot of people for example who train with my football team but dont play. They help out on match days etc.

What out those people we would strugle
