PCI Card in PCI-X slot

Quick question before I break something.

I have a PCI card, but am upgrading the PC I want to use it in. The card does everything that I need and I really don't want to change it. However, my new PC does not have enough PCI slots to go around, and I do have 2 extra PCI-X (not PCIe) slots free.

My question is, does PCI-X come with backwards compatibility or should I get in contact with the card manufacturer first?

    Cheers in advanvce

I don't think they fit into the slot.

    Thirded.

But you can get some pretty cheap PCI Express cards

there is no PCIe (PCI Express) version thats not going to take a huge rewrite of the stuff.

Cheers, i was hoping the PCI-X might be compatable.

    Ta

    *Edit*
Actually lads, are you sure your not mistaking PCIe and PCI-X? The slots look pretty similar, except that the PCI-X is longer and has a key for both 5 and 3.3V (or whatever they are) which my card also has?

Hang on... if its PCI-X it IS backward compatible.. unless we are talking some very old PCI cards here.
Your modern day PCI cards should work. Not with PCI Express but it will ith PCI-X
Trust me... i have installed them.
I installed PCI network cards into HP ML350/370 servers (generation 5)

    Cheers Saruman
I thought so, just wanted to make sure.
I've been having look about the manufacturer's site and have found that it was compatible with some older versions of my PC, so I'm assuming that this card is not too old to work in this one.

    Cheers again

To make it simple. If your card has 3 slots its fine. If it has 2 its not (very old).
So by old i mean http://www.avtec.com/var/avtec/storage/images/products/telemetry_command/demod_bitsync_viterbi_pci/7128-9-eng-US/demod_bitsync_viterbi_pci.jpg
and by new (3 slot thingies) :
