I was angry for Cork when I read this. The following is from Hoganstand.com

Kerry senior footballer Tom O’Sullivan has warned his Cork neighbours in Rathmore that it could be another two decades before they see the Sam Maguire Cup.

O’Sullivan was speaking at the homecoming for the famous cup at his home town in the company of fellow local Aidan O’Mahony and the rest of the Kerry party as 15,000 fans celebrated yet another All-Ireland SFC triumph.

"If there are any Cork supporters here ye probably didn’t see the Sam Maguire for 10 years," O’Sullivan told the hooping crowds.
"But as long as this team is around ye won’t see it for 20 years.

Little does Tom O Sullivan know that the current Kerry team will not be around for 20 years,at least not in a playing capacity.Furthermore,Kerry football could very well go back into the doldrums and Cork might just win one in that time.Somebody must tell good ol Tom that all good things come to an end, particularly in sport.Kerry were pretty much non existent for Sam in the 1990s.The conveyor belt of talent in Kerry will dwindle again at some stage.

    C'mon it's just harmless banter.

I am not surprised by those remarks at all. It's common practice for Kerry to rub our noses in it whenever they beat us, that goes for the fans as well as the players. I could tell you some stories of the ****e I've had from them over the years.
They are not known for being gracious losers or winners. Pat O' Shea was trash-talking about Cork in his speech as well I heard.

The wounds are bit raw for that kind of remark, little irresponsible. That type of remark is fine from a supporter not the manager and certainly not a manager in public.

    It's quite insensitive alright.

Cork players would never have indulged in anything like that and their supporters would have been careful to temper their celebrations to ensure that none of the Kerry supporters got upset.
One could say the same about any other county - they are all circumspect in victory when speaking in front of their own crowds and go out of their way to salve the hurt pride of their defeated foes.*

*It's possible that none of this post is true.

Really, that amount of total bitter rubbish takes some beating.

God. You poor man. I went to college in Cork and never was the piss taken, never did some plonker bleat on when Kerry were beaten etc. Actually - wait a second. It was! Many times! In many different ways!

Indeed, I even heard that Cork fans made bombastic claims about future domination to themselves as well! But I still heard of it. And it hurt. Oh, how it hurt.

Heard a funny story about Ger Power and Mikey Sheehy (long after they retired from football) stopping into a Cork pub run by an ex Cork footballer (Larry Tompkins) for a pint only to be refused entry and told in no uncertain terms to f**k off.

    Wa wa wa.

'They'? Well, you're quite unlike your ( )people. In that most Cork guys I know aren't bitter hypocritical whiners.

totally harmless and total s***e that they put this up on hoganstand.....looking for a reaction. if ye know your geography, you will also know where tom is from and how close this is to the border. this was said in total kerry v cork banter and if you find this offensive, then get a life. simple as that.

Id say thats just trying to get the crowd cheering. I would think he means that as a power cry towards the Kerry players more than an insult to the Cork players.

As for Kerry not being gracious winners, i had a chat to many Kerry fans after the semi and they were grand. Never got a bad word from any of them. Altho we arent Cork so the local rivalry may be different.

God bless you for having the power of foresight, have you next week's lottery numbers by any chance?
I was at the last two homecomings by AI-winning Cork teams in 2004 and 2005 and I never heard anyone on the stage mention the words "Kilkenny" or "Galway".

I can’t believe I am listening to Cork people here whinge about someone being arrogant towards them.
O’ Sullivan was getting the crowd going, in a place where as another poster mentioned, geography is a big part of it.
And he is probably right, this Kerry team has a lot of youth on it side.

Are Cork people as up in arms when it comes to the Cork ‘rap’ song that is played on Red FM for the All Ireland. I have not heard it but I have heard that it contains lyrics like ‘Kerry are S**te’- is that

Liam Horan put it best in his Championship Column on Drivertime Sport
Cork people …have a genetic pre-disposition to a generous view of their own worth

Didn't know Billy Morgan could rap!

Oh wait, they've taken down the link, pity...

Another thing I heard is "What were Mayo doing wearing red jerseys last Sunday!". Brilliant!!

I cant believe there are this many posts in this thread. So Kerry played up to the local rivalry a bit, so what! If it was a Dublin Meath final do you think the winners would not have done a bit of harmless kouthing afterwards, having said that if it was Dublin Jank et al would be on here with their usual vitriolic outbursts. There is nothing in that, and BB I am pretty sure Tom O Sullivan is aware that this Kerry team will not be around for the next 20 years. Stop being so sensitive.

Besides, Cork people in general are not the most gracious of winners themselves.

God damn it, why post something sensible. I was waiting for this thread to really kick off :p;)

Have to disagree with my fellow Dubs here.I thought the comments were made to rub it in the face of the Cork fans and teams etc whilst getting the cheers from the Kerry fans.Read that he mentioned if there were any Cork fans there.I'm not one bit upset but I would be annoyed for Cork when I think of being in their shoes.Maybe Tom was in such high spirits that he got carried away but I thought those comments were overboard.

We have seen threads on boards talking about sportmanship etc but this is in same category and I do believe that I'm not sensitive.I'm not from Cork and I'm not anti-Kerry either although their dominance is getting boring now.

I am calling it how I see it.I'm sure there are a lot of Cork fans that are not gracious in defeat or victory but this is not the issue or the point.Going by Tom O Sullivans speech,he might as well have said that to the rest of the country whether they lost to Kerry by a point or 10 as the 31 counties can't beat Kerry when it matters.

Maybe it was banter but I thought it was exaggerated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,742 ✭✭✭blackbelt

Also,I hope none of the Kerry people on here think I'm anti-Kerry because I'm not.I had a laugh with some of the Kerry supporters in Madigans after the semi-final and Yayamark was not at all proud or rubbing it in.It was all about fair play in the slaggings.:)

Exactly. Slagging from fans is to be expected, but the players and management should be above all that. You are right, Cork fans have been smug and triumphalist in victory and bitter and be-grudging in defeat, I totally accept that. But the players have never made those kind of remarks in any homecoming that I know of.
Tom O' Sullivan and Pat O' Shea have shown their true colours.

That's cos Galway and Kilkenney are not right across that bridge from where they are making the speech.

If Cork beat Waterford in an All Ireland final you would hear something similar from a cork player when he is on his own patch in Youghal, or somewhere else on the Corrk\Waterford border.

Believe me Benedict XVI, no Cork player would say anything of the sort in Youghal, there's too many Waterford people living there. When Cork play Waterford, about a third of all the county flags flying in town are Waterford ones.

I seriously doubt that. No Cork player would give them that level of importance.

I'm not that familiar with the area, Youghal was as much as I know about the Cork\Waterford border.

Sums up my thinking about Cork people having

Could you give us a link to that quote. Pat O'Shea seems to have been dragged into this without any evidence (not saying he didn't, just haven't seen it yet).

I agree with Utopia, drink taken, banter, end of.

What I mean is Waterford are not our traditional rivals in hurling.

I heard only one little mention about this speech, other than that not a word. People on both sides don't care. Cork and kerry people actually get on very well :)

One last thing, it seems impossible to have a thread about Cork (no matter what the subject) without people going on about their arrogance/cockiness etc..its getting boring. Ye spend more time going on about it, looks like ye are the ones with the problem...time to let it go ;)

Pat O'Shea ended his homecoming speech - in his hometown Killarney - by saying "There's only one team in Munster and thats Kerry" or something to that effect - completly harmless stuff.

Tom O'Sullivan's father and uncle are FROM Cork, he was having a bit of a laugh at their expense at the home coming. It was a bit of craic, local banter in Rathmore which is right on the border of Kerry and Cork. Take this into account before judging the comment, its totally harmless.
