I need a half-decent flash for my digital rebel. I don't really know the first thing about flash guns and can't spring for Canons top of the range speedlite, but has anyone had any experience with Canons other stuff or third party gear?

The Canon 430EX is a very good flash. Obviously the 580 and 580 II are the top line models, but the lower ones are brilliant quality too.

Am I sacrificing much functionality? I should have said that I'm pretty ignorant about what can be achieved with flash.

Firstly, ask yourself what you want the flash for. For the majority of times, the 430EX is perfectly fine.

You might want the 580 etc if you're using multiple flash together or more advanced flash photography.

Save up for the 580 tbh.

I got mine for 300 quid in HK...which is less than the 430 here in Ireland.

Hey man how are you? I should have said that my camera is a 350 D, I don't know if that makes a difference in terms of 'too much flash for me to handle' or anything like that. I mean I'd be spending more than half of what the cameras worth on the flash. Although I DO want a flash and if it's the one to go with, I'm all for it. Sorry if that didn't make sense.

Lol, makes perfect sense. At the end of the day, you can use lenses that cost 5 or 6 times the cameras worth.

Go for the 580. You can always upgrade your camera later. ;)
