    Not on an Irish sub.

yeah, you can't record the "other channels".

what is the reason for this though - BBC4 is widely available here on cable, its FTA on satellite - why can't Sky just put it on the EPG and be done with it??

Sky have to pay BBC Worldwide for each channel they carry on the Irish EPG.

Theoretically, you could call Sky and tell them you've moved to an address in the UK, giving them the address of a friend or relative there. They won't impose a moving house charge if you say you're happy to self-install. Bingo, UK EPG. Move back to Ireland to resume Irish EPG.

I say this is theoretically possible, because it is. You'll have to come up with your own reason for "moving" from one country to another then back again in such a short space of time.

Oh, and before I get slapped, check that it's legal to say you're moving when you're not.

They cancel/restart your account if moving UK to Ireland, though - new cards, etc. GB to NI works for getting both RTE and BBC, mind.

That's what I thought, especially since the cards themselves are different (different customer service phone numbers printed on the back for a start), but this is what I was told by Sky's moving house department. Originally it was going to be £50 / €79 moving home charge (not sure where they get their exchange rate from), but if you're happy to install yourself, then there is no charge. Apparently it's just a case of changing the address on their billing system. Agreed though, seemed a little too straightforward to me too.

I have an "Irish sub" (Setanta card-only) on a UK-printed card; so thats not really the issue I believe.

I know it's very easy to move from UK to NI ;) but I'm unaware of people successfully "moving" from ROI to UK/NI. I doubt many have attempted, less so in here.

Well, if the representative in Sky's moving home department was correct in what he told me, then I'll be doing the very same very soon. I'm located in ROI but prefer the UK EPG. I plan to take Sky up on the recommend a friend / Sky+ for free promotion. I thought it had finished, but I rang up yesterday and it's still ongoing, apparently. I'll post how successful it goes later. All I need now is a friend.

Why can't you record off the other channels

I presume Sky don't allow you for money reasons

Use the rf out and record it to a vcr or dvd burner...not quite what you want but better than nothing....

presumably UPC also have to pay for these. Hopefully additional competition from UPC will persuade Sky to add these channels (and UTV) to the Irish EPG. Won't be holding my breath though.

This sort of fooling around is why I got a separate DVD/HDD recorder and a FTA box (as well as Sky) instead of Sky+.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.
