hi does anyone know if you can pay for an upgrade at the check in desk, we are flying to new york with delta. has anyone any tips for getting free upgrades.

You can offer to pay, but you'll probably end up paying full price. It's not a "here's €20 *wink wink* sort of deal.

As for free upgrades, it's been discussed before. The only guaranteed way is to pay for it. Otherwise being a member of Delta's Frequent Flyer plan with status might help, or one of it's alliance partners plans. Other that that, it's pure dumb luck basically.
