A "new" player arrived on i-poker last week..... new as in i have no stats on him but he's no noob if ya know what I mean... I have him as a large winner over the last week with 6000 hands both played and mined and he is running like a Kenyan on fire at 15bb/100. I know he is causing a stir over the last few days as a few of the reg are asking me if I know him....

This guy is no donk and I would class him as very difficult to deal with... unusual for this level..... He has been steamrolling every table he is on... if there is a raise you know it's gonna be him.... he is constantly 3 betting me and anytime i seem to 3 bet him in any way light he shoves ott....

I've been playing pretty tight at 17/10 over the last few weeks as I have a lot of tables going.... I've tried just not sitting with him but maybe I'm paranoid but he keeps appearing at my tables... I swear he's buddied me but he has no real reason to do so apart from I've been generally folding to him on pf/ or on the flop or turn op somewhere along the way..

Hi stats are 18/17/5.5/6500 his agression factors on streets are pf 7.1... on flop 7.81... turn 3.9.....river 2.7

I'm actually down about 4 buy in's and tht includes me stacking him with a set yesterday for 300bb's but he is runing my game and very difficult to play against...

For the last few days I've been generally waiting for cards against him but have chickened out a good few times to second and third barrels when a scare card arrives... but I just havn't been getting enough cards to do any damage....

Today I decided I have enough of this guy..... time to take a stand... so I pushed AK when he 3 bet me earlier and he called with 99 and took it down.... a few hands later I flopped top pair with AQ in a 3 bet pot (he 3 bet I called) and I lead the flop and he shoved over for 130bb's more and I folded....

here are a few hands from todays play.. I'm not really looking for opinions on them although your welcome to give them but more on how to deal with this guy????

Dropped another 4 buy in's to this guy today trying to take a stand...the best I got was getitng it in preflop at 50/50.. I pushed with JJ he called with AQ after he 3 bet and hit. I pushed AK twice pf against him and missed both times to his small pairs... maybe it's not the way to go.....

edit your post so its clear who you are in 2 and 3.

I can't see what your doing wrong really, you lost a lot of coin tosses. It could have been you who was up the 4 buy-ins rather than down. Unfortunately for you that wasn't the case this time around but that's poker. It looks like he is prepared to get all-in preflop light, so I guess unlike playing a Rock where your folding probably even QQ to an all-in re-raise you can mix it with this guy far lighter.
What else can you do really. A troublesome lag is always going to be tricky to play.

Playing this guy seems to be variance at its best/worst

#1 I think I would stack off with villian as described.
    #2 That's simply unlucky Mac

You can either nit up.... or out aggro him I guess. Nitting up would probably result in getting pwnz0red though, but what do I know ;).

it's probably worth discussing that hand too. bet/folding the flop vs this guy sounds really bad.

    Edited accordingly.....

Do't know if I should post his sig in the forum or if thats allowed? in case he is a boardsie  quite possible because this guy is not bad at all...... If I made him out bad in my posts then I came across wrong...... he's good at what he's doing.....

    PM sent DVD

I think i'm the man you're looking for Mac. I have 6700 hands under my belt at Blondepoker under my new secret SN in the last 10 days at .50/1

"His stats are 18/17/5.5/6500 his agression factors on streets are pf 7.1... on flop 7.81... turn 3.9.....river 2.7"

Doesnt sound like me though :p:p

If this guy is following you around Paul, have you considered that maybe it's a boardie? You do reveal a lot about your game on this board.

Maybe change your SN, and keep it secret herein.

Edit, just saw your post above, you have considered it.

You should really stop leading into 3 bet pots and folding to shoves with strong hands

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,158 ✭✭✭BobSloane

If he sits in one of the seats to your left, just leave. I am a coward

I doubt he has you on his buddylist. I'd be more inclined to think that he has the same fish on his buddylist as you have and thats why you keep ending up at the same table

tbh I don't think an 18/17 will cause you much long-term trouble. You mentioned above that he has been calling all-in preflop with small pairs, and also the KQhh loss doesn't look very good from him, so I wouldn't be worried about him yet. Although I did think derra was terrible when he first arrived on betfair, and he was doing similar stuff
You were probably card dead, got frustrated and went after him with relatively weak stuff. But if he isn't folding pairs when he shows aggression, you should be able to win so much from your big pair hands that you can let the more marginal ones go.

you'll prob find that I was the one with the KQ if you look again?

going on a mission to beat a certain player who seems to have an edge on you is probably a mistake. i certainly don't like bet folding the 1010 or the AQ, give him rope with type of hands and don't be afraid to potentially stack off with a hand you ordinarily wouldn't. not a lot more you could do with the KQ, except fold preflop. try playing turns and rivers against him getting to showdowns as much as possible and figuring out what he's doing with his different hands. don't try to beat him at his own game, you aren't used to playing that way and would be favoured to lose.

I know that, I probably made it sound ambiguous. Your play is fine obv

macs i think this is pretty important and something you should definitly try and fix.

i think the forum would be much more useful for you if you focused more on posting hands for strat discussion rather than spending so much time in the bad beat section. the same leaks seem to appear continually in the hands you post. i know if i were playing for a living this would concern me much more than it seems to concern you.

paying more attention to advice such as valor's above would be extremely beneficial imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,754 ✭✭✭ianmc38

Yeah the toughest players by far are the good 20/18 or 24/22 types.

I hate your fold in hand 1 with the tens and I hate your bluff in hand 3 with the tens. Hand 2 looks fine.

Macs heed this advice. You spend too much time posting bad beats. If you spent less time doing this I'm sure you're game would be much better off for it.

Thanks for the advice guys..... Only reason I post a thread like this is to get advice from better/other players and I filter through the advice and apply the appropriate ones to my game.. I find it improves my game no end....
The advice about leading into a 3 bet pot and folding is spot on... I suppose the only time I should do this is in order to try to get my stack in yeah?

CS.. experiment time..... no BB posts for a week and see what happens

I dont want to hear it for a week Mac haha! GL mate

    best of luck.
