Not seeing wireless network

I've been away from my flat all summer and just returned to discover that my computer is not finding my wireless network. It was fine all last year, now it's not even seeing the network on the list of available ones. I've plugged and unplugged both the modem and the router loads of times, as well as turning on and off my computer, but it's not working. If I connect the modem to the computer, bypassing the router, it works, but I want it wirelessly. The lights are all flashing correctly on the base, so it is working. It's driving me insane!! Anyone have any ideas?

    Hey Faith,

Any chance the SSID if the wireless network is set to not broadcast? If it is, it won't appear if you search for wireless networks.

    What brand is it?

irlrobins, you're a star! That's what the problem was. I never even knew that setting existed. Now I just have to figure out how to secure it!

    Thanks so much!

You're welcome. Securing it is easy enough. Just tell us the model number of the wireless router/modem and I'll talk you thru it,

    It's a Phillips SNB5600.

Faith, did you notice the SSID setting on the router via a web browser, at the routers ip address, e.g. 192.168.1.1?

If so, there should be a section on wireless settings, which should include a sub-section on encryption. I'm not too familiar with the model but I'm sure someone here can fill in the specifics.

Yeah, there is, and I tried encrypting it when I got it, but it didn't take and I didn't try again! It seems to be an unusual enough model alright.

    Set up router:

    1) Open internet browser
    2) go to http://192.168.1.2
    3) login
    4) click Security
    5) Click Wireless
    6) Select WPA/WPA2
    7) Enter your passphrase
    8) Click Save Settings
    9) Click Wireless Encryption
    10) Select WPA/WPA2 only
    11) Click Save Settings

    And that's the router done.

Setting up the wireless card depends on what utility you use. But all you need to do now is enter the passphrase from above when prompted to.

Excellent, thanks so much! I'd gotten as far as step 8 last year, but never did the last bit. I really appreciate all the help!
