Chaintech 5VGM M101 Motherboard

    I have just dug out this old motherboard and tested it outside of a case using a graphics card, ram, and cpu/fan. It had a keyboard attached. The only thing it didn't have was a HDD connected. It worked fine.

    Now, my question is, what can be done with this? Anything? Or is it a bin job?

    If im right chaintech folded a few years back. Depends what you want to do with it. Build a media centre pc around it. use it for some type of distributed computing program etc etc.

    I have one of these boards lying in my parents' house in Kerry. Socket 7 if I recall correctly? You'd be lucky to run XP on it, more likely Windows 98 or NT 4.0. Maybe Windows 2000 if you can pack enough RAM into it, but the chipset can only cache a maximum of 64MB RAM so any addressing above that may take a performance hit.

    I've no idea of Linux performance tbh.

    I have four other old boards lying around that I am sure are more up to date than this one, as they have the PS2 sockets on the back. This chaintech one has the old big round din socket. So I was thinking of using two of the better motherboards, one for a server maybe and the other as a spare room basic PC for guests to check emails etc when they stay.

    Would there be any interest in the Chaintech mobo if I put it on ebay?

    That's right, socket 7. :D It's got max ram on it 128Mb. :rolleyes:
    I have an old copy of windows 98 around somewhere as well. Although, as I said above, I have other motherboards to test so depending on whether they all work or not It may not be required.
