Martial arts in Wicklow/Carlow/South or West Dublin

    Hey everyone!

Really need some help here. My husband and I moved down country from North Dublin in May, and have been looking for a martial arts club to train with but can't seem to find one.

We are originally from Liverpool and we trained at a kickboxing club there for 18 months, which also did some muay thai. Then we moved to Dublin and found an excellent club on the northside where we did mixed martial arts (mostly kickboxing/muay thai) for nearly a year.

We bought a house on the Carlow/Wicklow border in May and couldn't keep going northside - so does anybody know of any suitable clubs in this area (Baltinglass/Aughrim/Hacketstown/Tullow etc)? We would prefer KB/MT or similar styles, but would also have a go at Tae-Kwondo or even boxing! For my husband it is mostly for fitness and discipline, but I would consider competition in the future.

We both still work in Dublin so if the training is on at the right time we could do Blackrock/Tallaght/Clondalkin and environs too.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Oh and does anyone know where we can buy a floor-standing kickbag, one of those massive heavy ones?

hi ,there are lots of clubs in the general area and on your way to and from work,
firstly there is NG Loughlinstown run by Dave Jones poster on this forum ( BJJ Mon to Wed and MMA on thursday nights)
Loughlinstown gym also has TKD, Kickboxing (part of the global group) and shotokan karate.
There is a Thai boxing Gym in Bray , Warriors gym opposite the Statoil on the Dublin Rd.

There is a Karate/kickboxing (semi contact) club in Blackrock run by Niall malone

and Paul Moran runs a well respected Kung Fu club in Newpark (beside Blackrock)

I also heard there is a new full time martial arts gym in kilcoole just opened but thats all I know. I live in Bray so if you need further info just PM me.
the Loughlinstown gym is just off the N11/M50 so has easy access so it might suit you best , plus it has a varietyof clubs to try out. Lastly welcome to the Garden of ireland.

Hmmm maybe i'm just being overly fussy but none of these seem to be suitable.

The problem is that I finish work at 5pm and my husband at 6pm, so we'd need to be home by about 10pm 'cos of the early mornings/long commute (Fridays don't count of course!) Its a pain in the ass 'cos most of the training I can find, that I like the look of, is on 9-10pm. If thats in Dublin its a bit too late!

Also I definitely don't want to have to do all the Katas etc. I don't mind doing belts, and I have an orange belt from when I trained up in north Dublin - but that was awarded for the level you were at on the day.

I just need training that will be tough but fun, body conditioning and strength building. Kickboxing and MT are perfect really but I think my time constraints mean I want be able to find a class

Does anyone know of a website for the Loughlinstown gym - or contact details?

    Hi there
You've probably found a club by now, but if not have you checked out bushido martial arts in clondalkin village. intermediate classes are at 9.30 mon / wed 8.15 on Fri. but you might fit in the advanced class which is 8.15 Mon/wed/fri.
    hope that helps!

Would you train on the weekend? eg Chupasart trains 2-4 on Saturdays (NB: as far as I know, Chupasart trains in SBG in longmile rd, so their website is out of date on its location, here's SBGs website which has its location in longmile). I'm sure other places train on the weekends too.

Edit: didn't realise that someone bumbed this old thread, still maybe this post could be of use to someone.
