I picked up this book on Friday thanks to recomendations by several folks at my club. It's written by a well known practicioner of classical Japanese martial arts and author of several definitive books on the subject of Japanese Budo, David Lowry.

In it he explains everything about how a classical Japanese dojo works and how its different from a gym. There's info on grading systems, bowing, relationship between sudents and teacher and lots of other bits and pieces.

He dispels many myths that still abound about dojo training and is a must for any practicioner - especially teachers, of judo, karate, kendo, jujutsu etc who wonders what on earth this or that procedure is for. Thankfully our club runs pretty much like the dojo he describes without any of the excesses a lot of Western clubs seem to be prone to - ie. focusing on grades and over-bowing etc. Check it out. A must for all budoka!
