RTE and their annoying "Ireland only" streaming policy

Why is this? Surely most people who would be watching the final online would be those who are abroad and don't have RTE TV?

Meh, I suppose I'll just go to the pub.

I would imagine it is not just a policy - more to do with International rights for the matches. Something which probably generates substantial income for the GAA. You are right though - anyone in Ireland will watch it on TV - not online.

    It isn't an RTÉ decision.

Setanta do a lot of online stuff. They might do GAA where you are online.

My heart soared for a moment when I went to rte.ie and saw the match was on and free.

And then I saw the part that said limited to the Republic of Ireland. :(

Setanta own the international internet rights, for which they charge a pay-per-view fee. Nothing RTE could do about it.

Whenever there is a big game on it never seems to work right for me. It works for the first 6 seconds and then it starts getting jumpy - anyone else have that problem?

Usually it works perfectly for me. Only time it didn't was Cork v Kerry last year.

Lots of irish pubs internationally have Setanta subscriptions, but at least here in Berlin the problem is that if there Rugby or soccer games on at the same time, the pub management invariably decides not to show GAA. Obviously this is based on a calculation that the majority of the english speaking population is British, so 'their' sports get priority as it pulls in more businness :-( I had a miserable afternoon the day of the Dublin Derry quarter final, traipsing from one pub to the next, only to eventually finish up in an internet cafe listening to it on the radio...

That said, I know that kind souls on boards are willing to allow people to use their machines as a proxy server so that we expatriates can get access to games. You just need to let people know a little in advance so they can configure their machines appropriately.

If you're ever in Rome, a great place to watch games is Finnegan's pub near the Cavour subway stop. I have fond memories of watching Tyrone beat Kerry there, and the atmosphere was great....

if someone posts a detailed description of how being a proxy server would be possible, I'll gladly do it for next years champo.

Me also, if all it means is leaving my computer on, i will do it also. I know how horrible it is to be away and come up short on a place to watch it so if i can help anyone avoid it, i will.

AFAIK it is not RTEs fault, its a European law that makes it illegal to provide online live broadcasts outside the country of origin. Same story with BBC when people outside UK want to watch football/cricket/whatever...

Really? I thought it was just because Setanta own the rights outside Ireland. Thats a strange law if its true tho. Wonder what the reasoning behind it is?

Sorry, did a little bit of research there and I think you're right - its ownership of rights not a European law. Basically RTE owns the rights to broadcast in Ireland but Setanta buys the rights for foreign broadcasts - therefore RTE can only broadcast within Ireland or online to Irish IP addresses

yea, its the same deal there. Yop, there is a way to watch them but not sure if it is legal or illegal. It doesnt involve any particular station but you can watch all games using a certain program that gets non-payperview stations from around the world. You can watch games with some crazy asian commentary, they are gas! If you like i can message you the site but not sure about posting it publically here.
