Trying to lose weight

Iv been trying to lose weight for the past 2 months. I changed my diet and i joined a gym. So far i lost about 17 pounds.
Anyway i completely changed my diet. I gave up every crap thing. Sweets chocolate, take aways, alcohol. Since i started if i look at a chocolate bar which is about 500 calories i would always end up thinking im going to have to spend about 2 and a half hours on a threadmill just to burn that chocolate bar. So whats the point in doing any type of exercise if im going to cancel it out by eating chocolate? It makes no sense.
Anyway it was my birthday on tuesday and some cow i work with bought me a chocolate cake for my birthday. She knew i was trying to lose weight and she buys me a cake. How can anyone be so stupid???
I had a slice of it anyway cos she did buy it for my birthday. How could i have said no? I coudn't have been ignorant and rude - even though she was to me. I felt like throwing it in her face!
I know some people might be thinking im so ungrateful but i didn't ask her to get it for me. And she went out of her way to buy it for me even though she knew i was trying to lose weight.

Why would someone be like this? Was she hoping i would fail? I dont understand.

Maybe she was just being nice and decided that you might enjoy a little bit of indulgence on your birthday?

maybe its because people like cake,

    for their birthday.....

C'mon it's a birthday cake. It's not like a drink for an alcoholic.
Yes, you have to work extra in the gym but still, it was a slice of a birthday cake.

There's no harm in having a bit of cake now and then, even when you are on a diet, as long as you know it's just a once off thing.

Maybe she was just being nice?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,316 ✭✭✭✭the_syco

Aside from choclate, what other cakes do you like? Aside from choclate cake, what other cakes do people know you like?

Oh! Oh! Would you prefer if everyone forgot it was your birthday?

Sure, it was the wrong one to get you, but at least the thought was nice.

I very much doubt that she did it maliciously, everyone is entitled to break their diet for their birthday. A relative of mine had a birthday recently and his work mates got him a cake even though he is allergic, they did not mean any harm and neither did your workmate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,292 ✭✭✭Galadriel

Thats a bit of a strong reaction to someone buying you a cake for your
birthday, even if you are trying to lose weight eating one piece of cake for your birthday (once a year) is not going to make much difference.

Has she give you any reason in the past to think shes spiteful? or was she just being nice cause its your birthday?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

...... don't know what choclate bars you're eating? look here http://www.weightlossforall.com/calories-chocolate.htm

point is moderation will do you no harm, people who make unrealistic diets never stick to them long term, so have the occasional choclate treat....and I would hate a birthday without a cake, pretty sure your friend feels the same !

Holy over-reaction batman! Jeez, she was just buying a cake for someone who is having a birthday. It's a nice gesture for your birthday. Don't sound so ungrateful. She didn't do it maliciously and probably thought that a break from the diet on your birthday would be a nice thing. Next year I hope she doesn't remember at all.

17 pounds... let me think what that is in modern terms... thats more than 8kg, congratulations.

As for the cake, really I think you are taking this to extremes, its not a drug. And also I believe taking things this seriously is going to do nobody any good at all.

In my opinion, the best way to lose weight is excercise. With enough excercise you can eat what you want. I have done it and it works. I am not talking about a leisurely walk or cycle here though, it takes more than that.

Anyway, if it was me, I would have been very thankful for the cake, I would have enjoyed eating it and I would not have felt guilty about it. Then later I would have gone for a run, swim or cycle. healthy balance is needed here.

Firstly, well done on losing the weight. However, it sounds to me that you've become obsessed with calorie counting, and that is really no way to eat long-term. To bring about lasting change you have to fundamentally change the way you eat. Cutting out all indulgences and denying yourself treats will not work in the long term. Why? Because when you fall off the wagon, you won't know how to get back on again.

Eating well 6 days of the week and allowing yourself one indulgence once a week is far better for you. Essentially it keeps you sane.

The woman did not buy the cake to make you fat or for any other malicious reason. If you've become so obsessed with eating, that you think your colleagues are out to sabotage you, then you need to readjust how you see food.

ok let's stay calm - it's one slice of cake!

    BUT

    try this next time:

"Oh the cake is lovely - but I'm on a diet - you all tuck in - more for all of you!"

    or another

    "NO!"

this happens is our office about 10 times a year and often there is cake for no real reason - I am not a cake fan and have no problem saying thanks but no thanks. I'm consistent in saying it and people get used to it. They won't be offended

You don't deserve a cake young lady. NO CAKE FOR YOU!!!!!!!

Seriously, a nice gesture on your workmates behalf and you come here crying like a child.

    Grow up.

Speaking from experience of losing weight - I did the unislim points and that way you can still work in your treats. Otherwise life is not worth living. And there are always going to be days like birthdays, christmas, weddings etc where you just give yourself a day off. You have to be realistic or you will drive yourself and everyone around you demented.

I'd imagine she just figured you'd be alright with having a cheat since it was your b-day.

I wouldnt worry about eating a slice of cake, everyone is entitled to have a few cheats everyone once in a while. trust me the odd cheat every once and a while is not going to affect your weightloss

I think you should buy your workmate a cake to teach her a lesson...

As usual everyone jumps on the op bashing bandwagon once they see the way the first few replies are going. As the OP called this girl a cow and says she was ignorant and rude to her I take it they don't get on. So why then is someone who is not on good terms with her going out of their way to buy her a cake when she knows she's on a diet. It's good going to even have a friend buy you a cake, so how come this non friend is being so thoughtful. One reason that comes to mind is that she's trying to ruin the ops chance of succeeding with her diet. I cant see any other reason why people who don't like each other would go out of their way to buy something for the other person.

I would love my colleagues to be sooooo nasty to me!

Enough of the cake jokes. I lost over 20kg earlier this year and not through dieting or gym. Just stoped eating between meals and spent less time in front of the TV, computer etc. Went for walks instead, got to like it so much I would go for 5-6km regardless of weather.
Diets dont work - change your lifestyle.

+1 I can't believe you are that nasty and ungrateful. Do you really think there was an ounce of spite in that girl, buying you that cake? TBH your excuses are pathetic. "Oh, oh, well I had to have a slice" Just don't eat it, and let others share it. Don't blame others because your not happy with your weight.
And there's nothing wrong with having the odd cheat meal now and again. It's been shown to help will-power to people on a calorie restricted diet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,395 ✭✭✭Marksie

You have not said OP if this lady was "ignorant and rude" as part of normal working life or just this incident.

Do you believe that she deliberately did this to get at you? and what evidence for that is there.

Your whole posts seems to be about seeing the worst in the gesture.
As other posters have said, losing weight is like you have done is wonderful, congratulations. People I know are on diets throuh weight watachers and even weightwatchers allows them the occasional treat.

Perhaps it would be better to examine why you have had such an extreme reaction to what may have been simply a gesture on your birthday.

Also examine whether you are now in a compulsion to lose weight rather than losing it for a specific goal

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,239 ✭✭✭✭WindSock

I wish my enemies gave me cake. It sounds like you are obsessing too much about food. like everything-enjoy it in moderation. A slice of cake isnt going to put your calorie count for the day up by much.

In lots of offices it's the normal "done thing" to buy someone a cake on their birthday.
    Cakes wrote:

If the presence of a cake will ruin it, it's already ruined anyway.
    Cakes wrote:

Because some people can act as reasonably civil, decent human beings to each other.

What's with "going out of their way"? There was nothing in the OP about it being necessary to go five miles (barefoot, in the snow...) to get to the nearest cake shop.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,401 ✭✭✭DublinDilbert

To be honest it's only a slice of cake!!!!! a slice of cake is not going to make anyone fat, or put on any appreciable amount of weight!

keep up the good work in the gym + watch what you eat, sounds like your on the right track, you probably feel much much better too...

    Hi Op

It is possible that your co-worker was trying to sabotage your weight loss plan but you have projected your anger onto her, like you I have been on a diet for the last three to four months through unislim, I've lost around 20lbs so my progress is much slower but I am taking a more balanced approach to food because I want to keep the weight off and learn about my attitudes towards food. I fear with your over reaction that you will lose the weight but struggle to keep it off. People are going to offer you tempting food and you need to look at why you can't say no, or more importantly accept it with thanks and enjoy it for what it is, a nice treat. If you blame others for your refusal to say no, you are never going to understand and truly change your eating habits. It is my belief that some people gain large amounts of weight due to emotional reasons, I am not saying this is for everyone (they could have gained weight due to illness, lifestyle change in a job) but I believe you may be emotionally tied to food and maybe you could look at that instead of putting your anger onto your co-worker.

I should add that I have lost weight whilst eating a little bit of chocolate every week, and having some wine and even the occasional bag of crisps.

    lol! a cake!

Seriously, it takes someone supremely evil to actually spend money to go out of their way to harm you. Maybe you need some ice cream with that cake to cool down?

Can we know what weight you are OP? I know you lost 17 pounds, but if you are still overweight then I can understand where you're coming from, in which case she was thoughtless, but this person did something nice and their heart is in the right place. You can't begrudge them because of that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

Yeah, just a tiny bit of an overreaction.

Unless you're training for the olympics, a small slice of cake isn't going to **** with your diet or make you swell up like a balloon.

Easy solution. Have a small slice of cake then send an email to everyone in the local vicinity - "Cake at my desk. Come and enjoy".

I also don't think that anyone buys a cake for another person on the premise that they and only they will eat it. Cakes are made for sharing.

Ye-esssss. That's EXACTLY what happened. Nothing to do with the OP's foul attitude and venomous outburst.
As the OP called this girl a cow and says she was ignorant and rude to her I take it they don't get on. So why then is someone who is not on good terms with her going out of their way to buy her a cake when she knows she's on a diet. Nope. There is NOTHING in the post to indicate that the OP and this "cow" don't get on. In fact, all that seems to be "rude" and "ignorant" on the part of this woman is the act of giving her the cake - nothing else.

OP, obviously you've become obsessive and perfectionist about keeping your calorie intake low and are terrified of falling off the wagon. Therefore, any threat to your eating plan will throw you off guard and on the defensive. Hence your completely unreasonable reaction. She was being nice because it's your birthday - no other reason. She shouldn't have done it since you're trying to lose weight, but it does not make her an ignorant, rude cow. It was a nice gesture and your attitude stinks. Plus, you're going to encounter lots of temptation - it's up to YOU how you deal with it, not other people. And a slice of cake is going to make sod-all difference in the great scheme of things.
Unless you have good reason to believe that she is deliberately trying to sabotage your weight loss process? In which case, give us more details.

I mean, think about it for a second. What sort of Grade A platinum-coated fecking loon would actually sit at home thinking to themselves:

"Damn that OP and her weight loss plan. I must sabotage it, oh yes. I must destroy her diet at all costs! But how, how to undermine this weight loss plan in the most evil way possible?

    *lightbulb*

Bwaaa-haa-ha-ha! I shall buy her cake! For her birthday! Full of cream and chocolate and yummy cake goodness! Oh yes, cake! Cake! Caaaaake!

    *opens flying monkey cage*

Fly my pretties! Fetch for me the finest creamiest uber-calorific cake known to man! OP's diet is Doooooooomed! *insane cackle*"

    Wimmin!

OP yes it was an over reaction on your part.

truthfully OP it sounds like you seem to have an unhealthy relationship with food and maybe not a good enough understanding of how nutrition works. chances are that at some point you are going to come off the wagon however as you don't know how to have stuff in moderation when the fall comes you aren't going to have the mechanism to know how to stop and pick yourself back up.

Also I would suggest time to look into proper nutrition and exercise. From the sounds of the way you are going I have a funny feeling that a good bit of the weight that you are losing is lean body mass and this is the type of body mass that you should be trying to keep as it helps to keep your metabolism higher. Also the loss of lean body mass is one of the main reasons that when people stop the diet they are on they gain quite a bit of the weight back if not more.

So my advise would be try and be smarter about your weight loss and exercise regime as it will make things easier in the long term. One of the best places to start would be the stickies in the fitness forum and if you have any questions there are a lot of people there who would be able to give you some good advise

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

I agree. You've been losing nearly two lbs a week for around nine weeks - that's a huge amount of weight in a short time. I've often heard that two lbs a week is a healthy weight loss - think of two lbs of butter! It's a massive amount to lose in just seven days!
