    http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2003883943_bankrobberies14m0.html

Striking a blow against crime in Washington.

Apparently Washington State's had some 120 bank robberies this year. The FBI, sleuth-hounds that they are, have determined that there is a strange correlation: Most people who rob banks appear to attempt to obscure their identities with the aid of hats, shades, hoodies, that sort of thing.

The elegantly simple solution they propose is, yes, you guessed it, to make it illegal to wear a hat, shades, hoodie, that sort of thing, in a bank.

Brilliant! Why didn't anyone think of this before?

As a result of this, doubtless fearing the fine which would result, bank robbers will no longer wear hats, shades, hoodies, that sort of thing, and thus be easier to identify. Or they will be scared of identification as a result of their compliance with the law, and not rob banks in the first place.
Many banks already ask customers to remove hats and sunglasses before approaching tellers, but customers often do not comply or bank employees do not enforce the policy, said Carr and officials at local banks. If it's a law, banks will have to enforce it, Carr said.

"Excuse me, sir, I need to ask you to remove your shades"
"Ask away. I have a gun. Give me the money"
Jeremy Stewart, 28 -- nicknamed the "Nomad Bandit" because he hit banks across the state -- told agents after his arrest last year that he knew the cameras would never be able to show his face when he wore a baseball hat, Carr said

Not that I'm an expert in security or anything but...
MOVE THE BLOODY CAMERAS! I don't know.. maybe somewhere a bit lower? Desk height, maybe?

"I need to go to the bank. Sadly, my prescription shades will probhibit my entering. Maybe if I hand them this note from the doctor?"

    I despair.

There is a bank on the far side of the town I live in that kept getting robbed. They finally brought in a new system a few months ago (which was a bit annoying at first), you do your transactions with the teller, who is located on the other side of the wall and you can see them on the television screen in front of you. You put the money/whatever else in drawer, then send it to the other side and communicate by phone.

Isn't that how an ATM works? :)

Sounds like a good system. Its focked up that somebodies life should be in danger while they're just trying to do their job.

Anyone hear of that guy (Niall Clarke i think) who studied at TCD and then went on to rob the bank of America in Bangor Maine in broad daylight with a loaded revolver...

He got away with 11000$ and was caught a couple of miles down the highway..
Craziest thing i ever heard.. only happened a few months back..

TCD can teach you a lot of things ... but obviously robbing a bank and getting away with it isint one of those things...

I think there's a UCD elective in it though... Part of the Horizons programme...

What is the OP on about? This is a good idea. Now if someone walks into a bank (normally protected doors that you have to go through 2 of them) the security can see if they have taken off a hat/whatever and can act quicker.

Well it's illegal to go into a bank with a loaded gun as well, but hey, bank robbers do that too!

Surely they will still rob banks with hats and masks anyway? Only the law-abiding citizens will be hatless? Hat-related penalties probably won't be too high, relative to the jail time for actually robbing the bank.

Aye, banks brought in the "please take off your motorbike helmet" thing a while back.

My bank is entered through a cubicle equipped with with sliding bullet proof glass doors, a metal detector and a face high full colour camera. You enter through the first door and wait in the cubicle for the door to close automatically. You can then see your face clearly on a flat screen TV on the wall opposite inside the bank. If the metal detector goes off you are requested to show the keys or whatever set it off. Somebody inside presses a button and the inner door goes opens. The really fun part is that it is a cashless bank, so all the security is just for the safety of the staff who are on first name terms with every customer.

Seems a bit excessive to me, sperm isn't that valuable.

Well don't think of becoming a security expert any time soon.
CCTV Cameras are up high for a reason. To get a good field of view and prevent the view being obscured. If they were at desk height, or any level at or below head height they would be blocked by people the whole time.

I have a $30 webcam on my desk. There is no reason to completely remove the overview cameras, but I also see no reason why each teller can't have one sitting right next to the till. Seems a hell of a lot simpler than remote airlock systems to me.
