    for that kind of camera (i.e. a 'proper' camera without being an SLR), I would always go with either a Canon or Nikon. They make everything else look like toys. NOt listed above, but I would recommend looking that the Canon G9. It's the very latest version of a long line of excellent cameras. Depending on where you get it, expect to pay between 400 and 500 quid

    Ooh yeah, if you can get that within you're budget, it's a great camera.
    Very versatile.
    Even the Powershot G7 would be good as it should have dropped in price now.

    Although the G9 is probably the best compact you can get, €585 is dear... surely you can pick up a 350D for less than that now?

    SLR cameras aren't for everyone.
    Their size makes them impractical for a lot of situations & the removable lenses mean greater care & maintenance is required.
