They'll just annouce that O2 are the carriers in the UK, and announce a date.
    Nothing to get excited about.

My contract with O2 runs out next month, I'm not sure what to do after that!
I'm just going to wait to see if the damn phone is any good first.

    Think Secret
European iPhone to arrive in November
September 14, 2007 - Apple will unveil its plans for the iPhone in the United Kingdom at a London media event next Tuesday, but the device will not be available to consumers until the first half of November, according to fresh information passed along by Think Secret sources. The Euro-spec iPhone will not be equipped with 3G network support, as some have speculated.

The exact iPhone UK launch date will likely land during the week of November 12, although sources have said there is a possibility the iPhone will be in stores the previous week. As previously reported, O2 will be the exclusive official carrier of the iPhone in the UK.

Apple is expected to host a similar media event in France the following week, around September 24, to usher in the iPhone's arrival in that country. The news will come ahead of Apple Expo, which kicks off September 25 in Paris. France Telecom's Orange unit will be the exclusive provider of the iPhone in France, and phones are expected to arrive in the hands of French consumers around November 29.

Meanwhile, T-Mobile is also slated to start selling the iPhone in Germany some time in November, although details of that product launch are less certain at this point.

European consumers are expected to be less forgiving of the iPhone's EDGE data support, as the much faster 3G network standard is widely deployed in the region. Development of a 3G-equipped iPhone continues, however, and sources say Apple could start shipping such a model as early as February 2008, much to the chagrin of early iPhone adopters in Europe.

Just cos its O2 in the UK doesn't mean it'll be O2 here. The UK launch has no relevance for us. I expect that it won't be released in this country until next year sometime and the carrier could be different.

Ireland is seen as a sub-market of the UK by most companies and so I would say that O2 will probably be the supplier in Ireland.

Vodafone lost the rest of Europe and are unlikely to interested in bringing the phone to such a small market, the iphone is currently 2.5g only and so would not work on 3 network and Meteor aren't even in the running

O2 will get it, no doubt. They are the only operator to have a relationship with Apple, prior to the iPhone, and I'm sure that means something.

Sorry for slightly off-topic post but am i the only person who now thinks the iPhone is a bit of a rip off when you can get a touch instead? Personally love all the features of the iPhone except that when yuo want to take just your phone with you, do you really want something that big for everyday use? Its the reason i could never get used to things like the xda. Just too big for carrying every day in my opinion.

For me it makes sense to have a touch for everything else (music, video, web browsing when there's wifi) and a decent phone which is more pocketable and can be got for free on contract. I really don't see people using the internet over the phone network that much...especially if its not 3g. This feature will get most use in wifi hotspots. The only features really missing then would be the visual messaging and the SMS features, which i'm unsure what the "real" benefit of either is. Just my 2 cents, but i reserve the right to be blown away when i see one and to really want it!!!

No, no you are not. I may get a Touch at some point in the future if it ends up becoming the de facto iPod. Very happy with my 5G for now though - I usually have my MacBook with me anytime I'd want WiFi (i.e. home and college) and I actually hate Cover Flow. Kinda hoping the Classic stays around actually.

Then again I'm also the kind of person who is very happy to use a Nokia 3510. Not a 3510i, a 3510 :p

It wouldn't matter about the UK/Ireland relationship due to Ireland's huge spend on bills and the number of handsets per head of population. What WILL matter though, is that O2 seemed to be the only carrier willing to take the financial beating Apple were dealing out for carrying the iPhone exclusively.

Well its official for the Uk absolutely no mention of Ireland tho.

Hope its not just England getting them. Just checked the Apple Store online and only the English one is down, the Irish Apple store is working as normal.

Priced at £269 which is gonna mean €399 for us

Makes the buyin and unblocking much easier now for Irish people though. Get ready to see lots of Irish iPhones in the next few weeks.

Yeah but what about the 18 month UK O2 contract?

Will probably be the new year before Ireland sees an official launch - whatever slim chance there was of me buying an iPhone has been nulled by the lack of 3G... it just makes no sense not to have it in Europe.

On the issue of the touch, I'd get it if it wasn't for the storage - I could easily pare back my song collection to fit in the 16gig limit (in fact I'm probably around that figure even with all the crap I have) but I like having more than enough space so I can add stuff in the future without having to delete others and more importantly so I can use the iPod as a HDD from time to time.

A spokesperson for O2 Ireland said: “We can confirm that O2 UK has been selected as the official carrier of the iPhone in the UK marketplace, however that announcement does not apply to O2 Ireland.

“Until Apple makes an announcement regarding other markets, the decision on the chosen operator in Ireland remains speculative.”

They are the UK prices, at the moment there's really no solid information about it coming out over here.

God damn, Michael Collins and Eamonn De Velera sticking their nose's in
