I know the fundamentals....i.e. set in space etc...but in terms of wow...is eve a better game...more interesting in any area or worse?

Would you believe I only came across an advert for it to day and read their website for the first time. Sounds really cool.

Can anyone fill me in a little bit more

(ps re off-topic....I'm interested to know more about EVE in relation to wow which I'm already playing!)

    thanks Guys,

Well I've played both Eve and WoW. I didn't really get into wow much due to the grinding involved. I guess the biggest difference between Eve and Wow is that, the grinding. In Eve you only grind when you choose to, to make money. You need money to buy ships and mods but you don't NEED to have the best stuff. Eve is heavily based on PvP and any ship in the game, even the crappest, can help in a pvp fight. The missions and other NPC stuff is just a side-game in Eve, a way to make cash for pvp. I think wow is the opposit to this.

Another difference is having no actual level in Eve. Your character trains skills in real time, even when you're not actually online, and there is no limitation on how skilled your character can become. You need to specialise, as to train every skill in the game fully would take around 10 years.

Starting off in Eve is a lot tougher then wow, and it can seem complicated and cold being out in space all alone. There are plenty of corps and people who will help you tough and it has a decent tutorial.

OK, I also read on their website that you can't get out of your ship? does that mean that you don't 'go a walkies' like you do throughout WOW? Is that not intensely boring as an idea...sitting in a ship all the time?

    Thanks Maddzy

No, the back story to the game is that you have been genetically enhanced to be physically connected to the ship that you pilot via a capsule also known as a pod. So you basically live in your pod and pilot different ships. They do plan to include the ability to get out of your pod and walk around in space stations in a patch next year, but its not really something that will enhance the game as it is.

Being stuck in your ship only gets boring if you sit around doing nothing, but there is a lot to do in Eve. Space is huge and Eve really gives the impression of this hugeness. Rather then walking around on your feet or riding a horse you are using warp drives and stargates to move around.

You can't really start playing Eve expecting it to be anything like WoW. Its like comparing LotR and Star Wars. They are both epic but in very different ways. You should play the free two week trial in Eve and find out what its like for yourself. https://secure.eve-online.com/ft/?aid=102321&nogreet=1

I've been the oppositte to Maddzy, I played WoW quite alot but could never really get into EVE.

I've torn through dozens of MMO's for the simple reason that, once I start playing one, I spend all of my time playing it until I get bored.

With WoW I go through phases of being bored, play another MMO and then come back again.

EVE has always infuriated me, because, unlike other MMO's it is not a time versus. reward game.

With a standard MMO, if you put x amount of time into the game and you get y as a result. A new ability, a new level, some new items.

EVE isnt like that. You can play the game for hours, completing missions and stock piling money, but ultimately it comes to nought. The game is designed that it requires real-time investments, in order to proceed.

As maddzy stated, it isnt a grindfest in the traditional sense, but in some ways thats worse. When I have grinded my way through another MMO and seen and done all I have wanted to do and moved on, I am still training my level 4 missile systems in EVE and need to wait a staggering 23 days before I'm done.

This is all a good thing, in the sense that, even when I am not playing the game I am still developing my character, but on the other hand, it means that I cant actually spend some time, developing my character. Which, to me, is ultimately what MMO's are all about.

In saying all that, I have found that I have been drawn back to EVE, giving it a thorough lashing now. The fact is, its the type of game that you would continue to subscribe to for a year+, logging in occassionally and still feeling satisfied about paying the subscription fee. Or alternatively, you can spend a few hours and earn the ISK (EVE currency) and buy game cards through the secure system.

Ultimately, it is up to players what they get out of either game. Each has its own distinct advantages and disadvantages and alot of the time, most people will find that they get different types of enjoyment out of both.

I know I certainly am, I currently have 3 WoW accounts and 2 EVE ones, active ;)

Good luck with whichever you chose, in either case :D

I personally believe that fundamentally, EvE is a better game. Not only because of the game, but because of the players.

Not only because of the game, but because of the players.

Ive heard this generalisation of wow players so much and its BS tbh.
Yes wow has many idiots and annoying kids etc but thats to be expected with 9 mollion players.

The people in my guild couldnt be nicer in fairness, most on the server ive come across are fine too.
Having said that there seems to be more idiots on another realm i have chars on so it ebs and flows.

Pretty much any mmo ive played has idiots and very nice people,to generalize wow as having ****ty people playing is ridiculous..

I would never generalise wow players in this way as I've played enough mmos and other games to know that every game will have idiots, even Eve does. However people tend to state Eve's player community as a good attribute to the game's experience. The average Eve player is 27 years old according to some survey done a while ago, and due to the complex nature of the gameplay the players who stay on after the first two weeks tend to be more mature then not.

In relateion to Ivan's comments I agree completely that Eve's character development can seem very unrewarding at times. But Eve's gameplay isn't about developing your character for the future, its about having fun in the present. You don't log on to Eve with the intention of making your character better, you should log onto Eve with the intention of having a few scraps or running a few missions and having some fun. Its kinda like a FPS in that way. The character development in Eve is done in the backround giving you more time to do other stuff in game.

No, I don't mean it like that, although WoW does attract a lot of people who just can't play the game properly. What I meant was that the players are better in eve not because they're smarter, but because of the way they play the game. I mean things like using spies in real life to get intelligence on enemies to aid them in launching their all out wars and giant fleet battles against each other. There are a lot more levels of play in EvE is what I'm trying to say. The pvp is more tactical and political, and it's a lot bigger.

Lets be honest I love WoW but most of the players are complete cocks.

U do meet players that just pi** you off no end in WoW. But i just keep away from them and not have anything to do with them.

granted, but name one game that is unlike that?

    Rts: Strategy spewing Asshat's.
    Fps: Cheating Asshat's.
    Mmo: asshat's with no life.

from playing cs:s and cs my skin is fairly thick to the usual online abusive or insultingly ignorant player. My realm has a few of them, not more than i could count on 2 hands.

For some reason WOW players feel the need to display their uber powerz by behaving like morons. A typical general chat conversation go's something like this:

New Player: Hi, I'm having trouble with X can somebody please give me a hand?
    LEETMOOCOW: L2P NEWB!
New Player: Sorry I don't understand
    LEETMOOCOW: LOL, LAZERZ KTHNXBYE!
    New Player: Knobbers /uninstall

General Chat in any major city in WOW is an online playground simulator and it makes me sad.

Personally I got into a medium sized social guild that has a pretty proactive approach to weeding out the worst of the dross, thats probably the only way you'll get a positive social experience out of WOW.

i hear about this all the time, but rarely see it... and i play alliance

the usual shíte you do hear is

sme jackass:<insert guild name here> downed vash
random muppet: OMG they are so ghey, like this bent server is like 6 months behind everyone else, l2p.

I must have been lucky and survived 1-70 without barrens-esque chat.

:) have to admit, my experience of WOW has been of some idiots, so EVE sounds like a far cry from that. The idea of more mature players means guys 'n' girls will have similar life contraints like work and sleep like I do. You don't often meet fellow aged people in wow.

speaking of some of the mentalers, two nights ago, in SW a group of people where taking the p*ss with each other about being slagged for loosing a baby...via upset at events in the game !. to be honest...pretty horrific talk for a game....hence the attraction of mature audience.

Thanks...that is really informative...I'm looking forward to downloading my copy and get cracking. Real-time development I think is such an implicit time sink....of course you're going to hang around those 23 days for upgade (i imagine) just to see it work....and I DO LOVE SPACE!!

WTF is with this generalisation thing.

    PEOPLE ARE IDIOTS.

MORE PEOPLE PLAY WOW THAN ANYTHING ELSE.

SO THERE ARE MORE IDIOTS IN WOW.

Not that hard to work out.

Having said that, ive only ever come across 2 eve players and they were the 2 fcuking cripples who posted on these wow forums about someones spaceship getting clamped or something.

So from my completely justified and scientific point of view, EVERY eve player is a complete retard.

Clearly many of the people posting in this very thread are Eve players, myself included.

    haha lee,

I find as I only interact and group with guildies or other high raiding guilds on my server i never EVER come across any idiots in the game!

Granted I come across them whilst levelling an alt running through the barrens but these are people who normally quit when they find that levelling after 25 takes more than an hour or 2.
