    Folks

What is the best VOIP provider?

I have been using Blueface for a while and its great, cant fault it

I have also been using VoipSTUNT and they are great also! They even give totally free calls to landlines if the call lasts under a minute. Only disadvantage is that you cant get a VOIP in number yet for ireland. But still good for making outgoing calls on the cheap

I probably will stick with Blueface but there seems to be an awful ot of choice out there and im not going to trial every single one of them so does anyone else have any other providers they would recommmend.

Quality of the call would be very important for me so i would not be interested in calls that would not be upto the task.

    Cheers

Almost 3 years with blueface on NTL broadband. can't complain much and support is always excellent. save us a lot for international call charges. i don't see any reason why i should move to other providers.

as for NTL voip service, the sales rang me many times and they just got very confused when i said i don't have a landline (they rang my blueface geographical number). ahahahaha... they just got speechless...

Am I correct in assuming that Blueface is only worthwhile for people without a landline ?

Why do you think that? The call charges on virtually all VoIP providers are far lower than landline (eg eircom) charges. And you typically get an 076 number which is local call rate for incoming calls nationwide - often together with a local geographic number as well. You end up with an extra phone line, with low cost incoming and outgoing calls and you can call anyone else in the world who has a SIP address free. Most VoIP providers provide email delivery of voicemail messages - so when you are at work and someone calls your VoIP landline, you get an email with their voicemessage within seconds. Far less of an interruption than having your mobile phone ring. Eircom doesn't offer this service.

Ireland is one of the few countries in Europe where the incumbent hasn't been forced to provide VoIP services to consumers. Why? Because eircom has a grip on the Irish market like no other incumbent in Europe due to incompetent regulation by ComReg and government incompetence in directing matters.

Ireland has the slowest DSL broadband in Europe - and the most expensive - with the result that only 16% of the population has broadband. I can't find stats for Irish VoIP subscriptions, but suspect that they are even more appalling.

also, blueface features like gomobile enable me to make cheap calls over mobile phones should i am away. no need to get a calling card, etc.

No. Blueface or NTL VoIP enables those with a landline to switch exclusively to VoIP if they wish, dumping the landline (if you have a non-landline broadband service).

But Blueface do provide an ATA for those with a landline, which allows you to enjoy the benefits of VoIP. But you have to keep paying the Line Rental to Eircom. I'm not sure if they still offer this option though - can't find it on their site.

Why should Blueface know or care that you have a landline?

You're obviously unfamiliar with the technology. Blueface, up to recently, sold two ATAs - one for Cable/Wireless BB and one for DSL (landline BB). So they NEEDED to know what kind of BB provider you were using.
