    Hey,

I recently got accepted into the M.Sc in Networks and Distributed systems, but as regards the course, thats all I know. I received my acceptance letter etc, but no information about the college , like a welcome pack or anything! Im just wondering is this the normal protocol, because I remember an ex-gf of mine started BESS 4 years ago and was inundated with literature about societies, the college etc. I just dont want to go into TCD knowing sweet FA like I did in DCU!

    Any thoughts most welcome

    B

Dunno about the protocol, but what would you like to know? If you post up some questions they'll definitely be answered by someone on here.

Ah well just bread and butter stuff really. One thing I am wondering is whether a student is confined to the library which contains materials relevant to what they're doing, although it would be silly if they were! I know where to eat (buttery, dining hall). Im just wondering about societies, thinking of joining the phil and/or hist but dont know enough about either! Im only here for one year so want to make it a memorable one :-)

Well for a postgrad you can take quite a large number of books out of the library, including out of areas which undergrads aren't allowed to. Info on borrowing is here.

There are bucketloads of clubs & societies in Trinity. Come into college during Freshers' Week and have a look around at the stands for them, and join whichever ones you like.

There's a general bit of information available on TCDLife.ie and it links to the various clubs as well, but also to tcd.ie/maps.

Postgrads don't get the Undergrad packs packed with the "Oooh you're young and marketable!" goodies. You can go to whatever library you like.

I'd recommend joining a couple of societies. Postgrads' social circles tend to be based around their classes rather than societies (etc.) because of the smaller class sizes. I do BESS, and as you're probably aware, some lectures can have 400 people there; thus there's more of a need for societes.

You won't need to know them, but you can read the College rules and regulations in the Calender.

We're nice and helpful here so if ya have any questions give us a shout. Oh and enjoy your year :).
