The Golden Compass-Religion references removed.

Now i just saw the trailer for the Golden Compass, the movie adaptation of Northern Lights, by Phillip Pullman. While the action and effects seem nice I'm concerned about the removal of references to the (catholic) Church, being replaced by a generic 'Magesterium'.

Now anyone who read the books would doubtless know of the distinct anti-religious feeling that pervades them. The removal of this will, i think dilute the story somewhat, especially in regard to the later books.

Does anyone have any more information or feel the same way?

The book was more anti-authoritarian I thought. I guess it just seemed more controversial in my head for them to be called "the Church" and all, and this impact will be lost I suppose...

Considering the rest of the symbolism in the books, I really cannot see how it's anti-religious, as opposed to anti-authority.

Oh I don't know about that, sure it was anti-authoritarian but remember all the references to angels and God? I'm not sure Mr.Pullman is the popes biggest fan anyway.

Most of the anti-religious sentiment takes is eluded to in the 2nd and 3rd books is it not?

You can be sure it'll be dumbed down a bit but it wouldn't have gotten made if someone in the industry didn't think it was a story worth telling.

    Really looking forward to it.

    Yes. We know.

I remember this being reported in an issue of SFX years ago. It's very old news right about now.

Sorry, that wasn't directed at you, it's just that this little bit of "News" is cropping up absolutely everywhere now that the film is drawing near.
