Recruitment Consultant - Average Earnings

    Hi,

I'm not sure if anyone will be able to provide a direct answer, but how much should a recruitment consultant earn per annum?

Someone I know recently started working as one, they're on 28k training wage at the moment, with no commision. After this period is up (3 months) they will go down to a basic of 24k, but with commission.

Now I'm not sure of the commission structure exactly, but this person seems to be under the impression that once they're off the training wage they might actually make less money. This strikes me as odd, as I'd always considered Recruitment as an area where if you are good at the job then you got the rewards (i.e. commision isn't rare and might make up a good chunk of your earnings).

    Was I wrong?

Should a recruitment consultant, even starting out, find it hard to hit 30k P.A? If so, it sounds like a bad move for this person financially.

    It's a sales job.

24k basic + commission is normal.

I worked in a company with a lot of "recruitment consultants" and the salaries ranged from 18k - 30k + commission.

It's sales dressed up by another name so its one of the most ability driven industries out there.

Everybody I know in Sales would be chomping at the bit to go from a fixed salary to OTE based commission as they'd be supremely confident they could make and break their targets. The fact your friends concerned that they might not gives an indication that sales might not be best suited to them.

The area he/she's in will also affect their potential to meet their targets. For example with construction on the downturn competition amongst recruiters will be fierce for positions. As the new kid they might not have the contacts to break into what can be quite a closed industry.

Recruitment consultants can and should earn a fair bit in commission on top of their basic. I have managed several large agencies in Dublin - and I would guess the average commission paid on top of monthly salary would be around the €800 - €1000 mark. Equally some of my best consultants earned far more than that - boosting their earnings to around €80k p.a.

There are lots of factors to take into account - will your friend be doing permanent or temporary recruitment (perm makes more money but is more difficult, temp earns you less but is steadier), is he/she being given any accounts to work on from day one or is he/she expected to find all her own new business, which sector they will be active in etc etc etc.

Thanks for the replies. You've more or less confirmed what I thought .

My friend has only really just started, so I think it's more pessimism and taking the worst case scenario rather than thinking it isn't the job for them. All should work out ok :)

Hi, does anyone know what the current "normal" commission rates for recruitment consultants in Dublin are?

I have been offered a job with what seems like a slightly higher than normal basic salary, but the commission rates seem quite high which makes me think I am getting a raw deal..

Any experience / insight greatly appreciated!!
